Having a clear scope of work is key in any project. Without a clear scope, it is very difficult to stay on a set schedule. Budget is another concern with any project. You don't want to add any unnecessary costs. For example, if you're remodelling the kitchen are you keeping the existing cabinets? This would need to be clear at the onset of the project so trade workers don't remove and destroy the cabinets. With a clear scope of work, it is easier to order materials and create a timeline for completion.

In my experience poor scope results in increased project duration, budget overruns, quality compromises, material wastage and frustration among team members and owners. To address these issues construction managers have to engage owners, architects and engineers to set clear objectives and establish boundaries for the project’s scope.

Setting expectations and standards from the very start of the process is key to running a successful project. Making assumptions is a catalyst for many project downfalls. Each stakeholder must understand what their expectations are, what the minimum standards are, who the pcg is and always providing continuous feedback. Always reviewing budget, program, risks and outstanding items to ensure timelines aren't blown out.

Yes I would like to add an example of my own experience to overcome communication errors.Suppose a field engineer has been assigned a structure beam erection task. Before initiating the task ,site engineer must clearly communicate & explain to his workmen team these points 1.Step by step activities involved. 2.To wear mandatory personal protective Equipments kit to all involved workmen. 3.Ensure approved work permit. 4.The risks associated in each step along safety & precautions measures to be taken by performing safety task analysis. 5.Inspect lifting Equipments tools & tackles validated to use. 6.Approved lifting calculation as per load chart. 7.To only use authorised scaffolding for bolting and securing the beam after erection.

I would pick on inadequate stakeholders involvement. - The lack of involvement and insufficient feedback and input from the clients and end users. - Not keeping stakeholders informed and involved throughout each stage of the project. Undoubtedly, projects suffer due to a poor leadership. A leader is supposed to set targets, issue guidelines, analyse risks, ensure effective coordination between teams, acknowledge peer feedback and most importantly trouble shoot problems based on experience. Even the most experienced teams sometimes fails to deliver, under a leader lacking the above skills.

In my experience estimating, planning and scheduling are the main failures of most construction projects. These three concepts wreck havoc on any and all construction projects.

Properly tracking changes and issues and ensuring they are addressed asap once they are noticed. A delay in schedule needs to be addressed day one, not 2 months later.
