Safety planning has to be an integral part of overall planning. Just as schedule and quality risks are considerations in selecting (or developing) means and methods to complete a construction task, safety risks have to be identified, evaluated and managed. This allows the team the opportunity to have tough discussions and reach consensus on how to address safety hazards proactively within the work plan. The result is that foreseeable safety incidents are prevented and unnecessary field conflicts between production and safety are avoided. Safety cannot be an afterthought especially in a high-pressure project environment.

I agree with all the planning for sure, but at what point will we factor in the schedule being set at an unsafe pace for the workers ie. physically and mentally? Suicide rates are extremely high in our industry !! I know we all sign contracts agreeing to the contractors/ owners schedules , but when will someone stand up and say enough is enough for the workers………

To best understand the risks & how to implement effective controls, it is imperative that conversations are had with the workforce.

Get a training session done according to the OSHA manuals with certified safety trainers. This has to be done for every risky work that takes place at the site

During high pressure construction phases that is the time you increase unplanned safety inspections. You don’t want an OSHA inspector (Federal or State) in your business. But you also need to enforce your rules and don’t be scared to send people off the job site. Short term could be negative impact but OSHA shutting down a job site because of safety issues is not acceptable for anyone. Think of it this way, sending an idiot off the job site probably saved his/her life and possibly the lives of others (and perhaps your own life as well). Safety inspection reports are nice but the real time corrective actions you take sets the tone which is especially important during high pressure construction phases.

If you are in a "high stress" phase then you have already messed up in your planning, or your risk management regarding which projects you want to take on. Take time to stop and assess how you got to where you are, look backwards and learn how to avoid it happening again, and then look forward and get full team involvement in figuring out how to progress through this project safely and as efficiently as possible.
