You're a filmmaker who wants to make better films. How do you evaluate your creative process?

The work is in the small details. Don’t just write a script with no clear goal, create a treatment, an outline and run the idea in your head over and over again. Make sure there’s not a film like yours already available. Ask a FEW trusted people about the concept. Then, write the script. I preferably create my pitch deck before I even write the script. It helps me to see my characters visually and to remember why I was inspired in the first place. Lastly, the tone and mood of the project can make or break your film. Sometimes choosing the wrong tone & mood messes with the execution of an excellent movie. With all that said, have FUN! If you’re not having fun then you’re doing it wrong :)

Self-evaluation is integral and valuable. Seeking authentic and sincere feedback from your creative team, before and after project completion, will give a wealth of context and perspective you're unlikely to gain by self-reflection alone.

When you seek feedback for your project, you have to be careful who you choose. Just because the person is honest or “tells it like it is” doesn’t mean they’re the best. EVERYONE has biases, yes you too. So seek out those who genuinely care about you as a person, but also want you to have a great project. Believe it or not, someone who’s not even in the film industry can be a great source of feedback. I have a person who I always ask to read my screenplays. This person reads 2-3 books a week and isn’t involved in the film world but loves me and can reference other fictional works to make sure I’m not copying (by accident of course). They know good writing when they see it. That’s works for me, so figure out what’s good for you!😄

One of the few ways to ever get better at anything is by doing it again, again, and again. However, you need to understand the difference between just repeating the same patterns and creating new ones. If you want to get better you should be deliberate about the aspect of what you are trying to improve. Is it the way you work with performances? Is it the visual element? Is it the timing of the story? Once you know what you are trying to improve, you can create ideas that will help you improve. Being deliberate about your improvements each step of the way and with each film you create will be the only way to truly improve. Advice from others, reading, watching - that is all improvement in theory. Doing it, is improvement in practice.
