But before diving into the technical side of it, there are 3 basic concepts you can master without having expensive gear. 1- Composition: The Rule of Thirds, The Golden Ratio, Leading Lines, Patterns, Negative Space, Balance... 2- Color: Understand color theory, complementary colors, and develop your own style. 3- Lighting: Natural vs. artificial light, soft vs. hard light, and the direction of light. After mastering these basics, get a bit more technical. Understand ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture, you'll be on the right track.

Learn to use natural and artificial light effectively. Experiment with different lighting setups to see what works best for different scenarios. Ensure your shots are well-focused and properly exposed. Learn how to manually adjust your camera settings. Experiment with various angles and perspectives to add depth and interest to your content.

Don't just master the basics—redefine them. Most influencers stop at the rule of thirds and proper lighting, but push further by understanding why these fundamentals work and how you can creatively break them to stand out. True mastery isn't about following rules; it's about knowing when and how to break them to create something truly unique.

While you don’t need the most expensive gear, having a good quality camera, lenses, and audio equipment can make a significant difference. Use tripods or stabilizers to keep your shots steady, especially for video content.

My advice is twofold: A) immerse yourself in photographers and their images. Study them. Look at how the light falls on the subject. Look at how the exposure - think about how the shutter speed and aperture have affected the image. Look at the presentation - are there details in the darkest and lightest areas? Develop how you could replicate the same results you see in your favorite photos. And, B) in most cases the 3 things that will improve anyone’s photos 1. Get closer to your subject, 2. Make sure the subject has more light falling on it than the background, 3. When composing the shot - look at the four corners of the frame and make sure there are no distractions pulling away from the subject!

Gear does matter—though I would still argue that experience always trumps gear. I've filmed vlogs with a $200 Sony camera, and music videos with a Blackmagic cinema camera. There are some basic requirements that your gear should meet, such as: at least 1080p (4K is even better), RAW photos (for photography), manual mode capability, a variety of video frame rates from 24fps to at least 60fps, interchangeable lens mount, external mic input, headphone jack, to name a few. A tripod is another must-have for filming interviews. And a capable computer and software that can edit your photos and video are also prerequisites. At the end of the day, your creativity and skill is what matters—good gear just makes it a heck of a lot easier :)

The first video I ever edited was in fact "in camera" on a cheap handheld camera—we would film a scene, the hit the stop button, then pick up the action immediately after hitting record again! I would eventually move to iMovie, then Final Cut Pro, and now I use Adobe Premiere Pro. I am constantly learning new tools and techniques; editing can have a profound effect on your final product. I'd agree that less is more... your tendency will always be to use transitions and effects TOO much. The next time you watch a film, you'll notice that transitions are rarely if ever used. Using hard cuts that are timed well is actually the best way to edit, in my opinion.

Don’t rush your edit but map out a finish date. There’s always more edits to do but that’s called the Directors Cut. Embrace AI and don’t fight it. It’ll be your Co-Pilot in years to come. Start with your learning about your equipment...cameras, lighting and software. This alone is a wealth of information to keep up with and it's a great start to make you a great photographer.

Think out of the box don’t do what’s trending be the trend. Follows and likes are not true analytics look to the past for inspiration in your future projects. They didn’t have AI in the past you do blend them for media of your generation.

The picture is the hook, the thing to make people stop scrolling and look at whatever it is you’re trying to say. The written text is what will get you the likes, the follows, and the shares. If you’re looking to enhance that, through your photos a little bit, don’t just post the first thing you think of. On the other hand don’t take one million photos and search for the perfect one. Instead make the image induce curiosity. And if we’re talking about video, it’s the same principal, but you put the copy inside the video itself so they don’t have to read.
