How can you identify your greatest strengths and weaknesses in an interview?

Before entering any interview, I suggest you take a moment and review past performance reviews. (if you do not have them bookmarked, saved, and often revisited, start doing this now). I don't suggest offering areas to develop without a prompt, however, if there is one, highlight what previous managers have said about you on both sides of the coin. Always add to this though. It's never sufficient to rest on what another person, even if they are your manager, says. That was a jump-off start. Pivot to your own reflections and where you have grown from some past areas to address. Lastly, do all of this in less than 3 minutes. This is a topic where talent sometimes can tend to lose control of the clock. Good luck!

I feel like this question is often a trap. Let’s just be honest - who in an interview where you have to sell your most important asset which is yourself - wants to start admitting weaknesses. at a certain level, I find interviewing becomes way more conversational than simple back-and-forth questions. When you’re entering the workforce or early on in your career, though, these are often questions that come up and interviews and to be quite frank, you have to know how to explain your weakness, but at the same time, make it look like it’s a slight strength. I used to answer something to the effect that I am very determined and driven, and I have to step back sometimes and allow my team to work at the pace that helps them be successful as well.

I have found this skill very lacking lately. I cannot tell you how many resumes I have seen that have absolutely no KPI‘s such as percentage of sales goal or actual sales numbers. If you are not in a sales role, there are other ways that you were measured on your performance. What people fail to do that makes themselves and their resumes become, become almost invisible, is to not have that information in front of the person who’s considering you for a job and have that information in your brain ready to explain how you got there and what those numbers meant to the organization. Companies want to know what you are bringing to the table period. That is how they determine if you are worth hiring and you are capable of performing.

As mentioned above, always include how you are working on your weaknesses and the progress you have made. Also, avoid mentioning any weakness that would significantly impact performance. Accounting candidates shouldn't talk about being bad at arithmetic - get the point?

One of the most important things I have found as an effective interviewer is knowing when to stop talking. Once you have answered their question, stop talking. Continuing with endless dribble and information that is irrelevant wastes everyone’s time and might eliminate the interviewer hearing about key your valuable experiences. Last year, I was in charge of hiring an individual for a territory, and one of the interviewees rambled on so much that I tuned out to what he was saying. Endless name, dropping and fluff is easily detected. Do your research ahead of time and be prepared to answer questions succinctly. You can add some color, but stay in control of your mouth. When you do, it will help you stay in control of the conversation.
