What do you do if new team members struggle to adapt to a collaborative startup environment?

Collaboration and teamwork are essential skills for any startup development project. However, not every new team member may be comfortable or experienced with working in a fast-paced, agile, and diverse environment. How can you help them adapt and thrive in your startup culture? Here are some tips to consider.

1 Communicate expectations

One of the first steps to help new team members adapt is to communicate clearly and frequently what you expect from them and what they can expect from you. This includes setting goals, deadlines, roles, responsibilities, feedback mechanisms, and communication channels. Make sure they understand the vision, mission, values, and objectives of your startup and how their work contributes to them. Also, explain the norms and rules of your team, such as how you make decisions, resolve conflicts, share information, and celebrate successes.

When our internationally distributed team needed to adapt to deliver our accelerator programmes virtually during COVID it was necessary to adapt how we worked. Here are a few things that really helped our team adapt to a new collaborative environment: 1. Communicate expectations clearly and specifically in writing but not overly detailed, for everyone’s time efficiency. 2. Leave any details to online video or face to face meetings. We talk 6 times faster than we write. 3. Communicate goals and aims, and leave it to the team’s experience and creatively to execute how they see best. 4. Trust your team to deliver. Communicating trust in someone’s ability is a great way to get the best out of them.

Engage a facilitator to facilitate a workshop with you and the entire team. Enable them to define vision, goals, roles, responsibilities, etc., in the workshop. That communicates strength on your part (servant leadership) and engages the team, gains support, builds commitment, and sets an example.
