What do you do if you're choosing new technology tools for a career in Computer Science?

In my experience, keeping tools to a minimum but also, figuring out all underlying tools that can be used and what subset of tools can get to your desired result faster and efficiently. And this is a constant re-evaluation process. Re-evaluate after a certain amount of time, if using some other tool(s) can help you further. So, I got onboarded on my team and saw them using famous API testing tools. I as Automation Developer needed VSCode for IDE. I was searching to see if I could use something within VSCode and came across Thunder Client. Thunder Client satisfies my need as an automation developer to test API and hence I do not have to request for approval for extra tool from security team.

It is crucial that you hone your people and personal skills. You will be interactive with verbal bright people and bring a introvert will limit your opportunity to gain a job as well as exceptance. Toastmaster experience and learning will hone these skills. Know how to present yourself and skill set.

It's like a problem solving, so first we need to define it and understand what it is, and to be as well so. Before exploring the vast array of tools, define your project needs. Identify the type of projects you'll be working on, such as software development, data analysis, or simulations. This will help you focus on the most suitable tools, like IDEs for coding or statistical software for data analysis. By understanding your requirements, you'll streamline your search and find the perfect tools to enhance your workflow and productivity.

Choosing the right tools are important in the following manners:- -if you choose a tool which has a high demand in the industry, the chances of getting employed or acing the career increases exponentially. -try to look for documentations, as they are far more in depth than any video resource available.✨👍

After Accessing my software needs, I have to see if those tools have enough community support if they will not get outdated soon, and if some base exists for the tool to help you get started. For Example in 2020 by Feb, Python receded support for 2.x and was constantly giving alerts for about 6+ months prior. If someone is developing some software in Python, It was advisable to use Python 3.x at that time as support for python 2 was getting withdrawn at that time as new implementations and faster ways get developed in new versions and if you keep pilling up on updated-software(s)-to-be, your long term goal will suffer and you will end up wasting more time pivoting to new tech. Though porting from Python 2.x to Python 3.x is available.

Considering features and compatibility is crucial, even within a team environment. Even within the same team, there might be two sub-teams where one relies on manual API testing, which will heavily utilize POSTMAN. However, as an automation developer, if my needs are met by VS Code—an IDE supporting multiple coding languages—paired with the Thunder Client extension, I'd opt for that solution over others.

1-Choose courses from various authors. 2-Break each course into manageable parts. 3-Allocate time for each part accordingly. 4-Practice what you've learned regularly.

You have limited time. Look for courses that can help you kick start on that. Do knowledge sharing with team members and ask them to help in the demo. Adopt a continuous learning behaviour. It's been 3+ years into my job using Python, I go on youtube and google and search for better alternatives or modules that I am currently using. I get surprised most of the time with library support and depth of Python language. An easy language for sure, but has a crazy community support. You may utilize platforms like StackOverflow for quick fix from some well informed people but do not forget "DRY and GRASP" and keep learning.

When exploring new tools, be realistic about the time you can dedicate to learning. Prioritize tools with robust learning resources, like online courses, forums, and user communities, to support your growth. Consider the tool's long-term relevance and its potential to contribute to your ongoing learning and professional development in Computer Science. This thoughtful approach will help you invest your time wisely and maximize your skill-building efforts.

Technology in computer science and for users is advancing rapidly in this time. To keep pace with these changes, you must adopt an updated approach, selecting only the best available tools and software to meet your requirements. For example, staying updated with the latest changes in AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, GitHub Copilot etc are essential for software developers to remain competitive in the industry.

I would start the process as if I'm about to create my tool. I will start working on a business case that includes all the components to make it compelling. Then, I will work on the requirements for the tool, inviting all relevant stakeholders to contribute. With the business case and the requirements, I will start shortlisting the solutions that address a high percentage of the business case and requirements. After that, I will start looking for the roadmap for each shortlisted product. The next step will be to invite vendors, allow them to pitch the product, and use these sessions to add anything I am missing from my research. I will pick the product more aligned with my needs and requirements while considering the upcoming features.
