Small conversations can go a long way. It can be difficult at times but always try and remain open to building new relationships within the finance field. This will help you connect with colleagues in your space and also be an asset for you to develop meaningful client relationships.

Don't start conversations by thinking about how someone can help you when you should be listening to what they have to say. Start by asking how you can help them and they will find ways to support and help you in the future. We are a team for the betterment of our communities. Every person I meet is a "colleague" I can support in that goal.

It’s important to be yourself. Authenticity will help foster a genuine connection. Networking is not a one and done thing. If you had a good conversation be sure to follow up and stay connected. A quick message thanking them for taking time to talk with you and showing appreciation for any insights shared goes a long way.

Sometimes it can be difficult to know where exactly to start. Think of those third parties within your realm that you engage with on behalf of a client. Find opportunities to share info with them on how your expertise can help them with other clients. Ask them the question, how can I help you grow your business and find opportunities throughout the year to connect with them on how you’ve been sharing their information with your clients.

The main takeaway here is to keep things simple. Don't try to use overly complex jargon to impress your peers or clients. True mastery of a subject/topic means that you can break it down into basic terms that anyone can interpret. This is especially true for the corporate finance field where there is no shortage of advanced formulas and complicated calculations. Effective communication is a skill and can be learned. Growing up an extremely shy and introverted individual, I had to practice communicating. Communication is really like a dance. It has a smooth rhythm where one is clear and concise with the message, keeping it simple. You should be engaged and actively listening. Your non-verbal communication will say a lot too. Slumped, looking at the time, or looking around will look like you are not interested. To help keep the conversation flowing ask open ended questions.

Many studies prove that 85-90% of communication is nonverbal. The object of oratory is persuasion. Written communication should start by clearly stating the goal. Working with clients, and especially attorneys, stating the primary issue in question format is essential. It is crystal clear that those who cannot state what the problem, question or goal is, do not know what it is, and they relegate themselves to typical American problem-solving methods. In other words, impatient and uninformed leaders encourage the wrong process that can work overtime, but causes waist. Instead of: ready, aim, fire… It’s fire-aim-fire-fire-fire-aim… Effective communication requires articulating the desired outcome. So, consider: ready, aim, aim, fire.

Biggest piece of advice is to remember is 9 times out of 10, the audience you’re speaking with does not have the same experience with your product that you do. Keep things simple and easy to understand. Quick examples can help you get your point across.

I agree, I have to listen more than I speak to find out exactly what my client is looking for in a solution. I can also say, I don’t know the answer but I know I can find out the answer and get back to them. The key to being credible is to get back to them in a timely manner.

If you can empathize with your client, you have gone a long way to winning him over. You don’t always get business on the first visit, but if you can build a relationship with your client through empathy, they will remember you on the next visit.

Empathy and sympathy sometimes get mixed up and they are different things. Empathy goes beyond feeling bad for someone. Empathy involves the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It means putting yourself in someone else's shoes and experiencing their emotions from their perspective. Take a it step further and ask how you can help. Show the person you understand them and want to genuinely help.

Human empathy must be balanced with sympathy. Most people are moved by other people’s sufferings. Empathy means physically, feeling bad, sad, or disturbed by another person’s suffering. But there comes a point where an individual cannot function if they feel so badly about another person’ condition that they cannot function. A sympathetic response does not require physically, or emotionally suffering. For many, not personally feeling sad or emotionally distraught by a family member’ missteps or misfortune is impossible. Appropriate response lay in a mature-balanced approach with constant check on one’s own ability to handle it. That a ability is a moving target, heavily affected by personal balance of one’s needs, and limits.

You need social skills to close deals. If you're uncomfortable presenting your case in front of an audience then you'll be severely limited as a finance professional long-term. Try practicing presenting to yourself, your friend, or your spouse and have them represent the audience you plan to speak to. This is a great way to get the jitters out and make sure you're coming across as your best self, hitting all of the high notes of the financial presentation.

Just be yourself. There are so many pieces of advice on how to develop better soft skills but at the end of the day, it just takes time and reps. Keep yourself grounded in your personality and don't try to be someone that you are not just to come across as more professional, you'll get tired of it fast.
