It is important to keep personal information/feelings about someone in the workplace quiet when it is not of harm or importance to the job being performed. To degrade someone's ability based on personal feelings is detriemntal to their diginity and value as a person.

Building trust is vital for creating a supportive environment where teachers can comfortably discuss their challenges. Establish trust by actively listening, validating experiences without judgment, and sharing your own struggles and solutions. This foundation fosters a community where ideas flow freely, advice is sought, and constructive feedback is welcomed without fear of criticism or repercussions.

To promote mutual support among educators in addressing setbacks and exchanging effective methods, begin by establishing a secure, accepting atmosphere. Facilitate candid conversations where instructors feel at ease discussing their difficulties and missteps. Regular reflective meetings can enable this, providing opportunities for collective analysis of problems and collaborative solution-finding. Establish a mentoring system that connects seasoned educators with newcomers for advice and assistance. Encourage joint lesson planning and co-teaching to share diverse approaches. I think professional vulnerability is an important leadership quality. Being open about challenges and setbacks, contributes to developing a trusting culture. This needs to be authentic and appropriate to both the group and the context. Where possible I build this into regular meetings (e.g. including an agenda item = what challenges are you expecting this term? what are your hopes and fears for your department? what are your key learning points from the last six weeks?) to normalise openness.

I totally agree with Marta. We build opportunities into our meeting schedule and calendar to ensure that we are systematic about reflecting on WWW (what works well) and EBI (even better if). These are also times in which we hold ourselves to account re living our values. Depending on the team, we have different protocols for listening to everyone's voices. There are different cultures in our school community and colleagues value the option to feedback in different ways. By making this change, we have higher levels of engagement and more authentic reflection.

Collective reflection indicates willingness to support each other, no judgement, finding the best solution for students irrespective of position (always keep the students in mind), and bonding as team. These can be done in small or big groups. Brainstorm together as group (get the flip chart out 😁) and come up with a WAGOLL (what a good one looks like). You can also provide a WABOLL (what a bad one looks like) and see how they respond. As I mentioned in a another post - a great quote to use at the start is “I don’t fail, I either succeed or I learn” To have a positive impact ensure there is a continuum, don’t make it a one off. Reflection is a power tool that can be built upon and can bring a team together.
