I think device ecosystem these days are literally split between iOS and Android (each brand has their own UI built on Android). It's actually not about consumers buying devices that are compatible, but the media systems used by car brands being compatible with a certain version and above for iOS and Android. The onus of compatibility lies on car brands and not vice versa.

Most new cars coming out are either using a USB (USB A or C ports) or have wireless integrations. Bluetooth/NFC are not the most common connecting technologies anymore. Aux is being phased out as most new mobile devices come without an aux port. So, the game in coming future is between USB and wireless connections. As more cars comeout with wireless tech, the accuracy and connection failure challenges should come down which would make this tech the preference for users out of ease of use.

Working in Audi, I have noticed some MMI softwares are not compatible with latest generation of IOS. The system fails to connect the device. We can bring more software updates to MMI (MultiMedia infotainment) so it gets compatible with newer generations of IOS
