What are the different marketing career paths for startup founders?

Startup founders can take different marketing paths to help their businesses grow. Some become "Growth Hackers" to find creative and low-cost ways to get more customers quickly. There are also people who specialize in making sure the startup shows up more in online searches, known as SEO Specialists. This is really interesting question. I think we can divide founders in two categories : a. Successful :- Founders with successful startups have a choice to become serial entrepreneur or become investors in other startups. They understand the importance of network, connections and the process to make it big. They help emerging entrepreneurs walk the path, they are familiar with. They are considered successful and will continue to attract investors and customers. b. Failed This category defines 95% of the startup founders that fail. Failure teaches lot more lessons compared to success. They are more valuable resources to other startups or enterprises with structured environment. Personally I believe it is very important to build on your strenght. As a founder, you acquire experience in many fields. This does not necessarily make you an expert in every dimension of marketing (or any other field). So if you are looking to build a career from your founder-experience, then there is many different routes: investor, advisor, board member, speakers, startup coach, sector or tech expert and it might link to your area of expertise you started your founder journey with at the start (most founders come with previous experience). So I guess before hopping on one or the other discipline, thinking through what your passion is and what gives you energy is always helpful!

In my experience, startup founders do a bit of all of these disciplines - without realising it! For instance many founders are great at PR (witness Elon Musk) and Product Marketing (witness Steve Jobs). I don't think they need to develop formal skills or expertise until their business has achieved growth and matures.

I believe you have the ability to lead overall marketing strategy and provide advice and support for startups. It's essential to strengthen brand identity, manage public relations effectively, and ensure customer satisfaction.

In both scenarios, you have an individual with a ridiculous amount of experience across multiple business functions as well as the knowledge of what it is like to be the boss (and every burden that comes with that).
