The voice is an instrument, like a violin, an oboe, it needs nurture, development, practice to successfully convey the 'piece of music' you wish others to listen to. With all the elements pitch, pace, articulation, emphasis, nuance, energy, silence, pause, we create sounds others want to be moved by. It's not always as simple as people listening, it's more. It's getting people to want to listen because your voice, finely tuned, creates desire in others to tune in to you, to feel your words, to desire more, to emote, to get excited, to understand the seriousness, sadness, joy, to truly partake in your story. Talk to yourself, listen to yourself, be honest with your voice and when you feel your voice is ready, share your story.

A piece of advice I'll give on this subject is that your tone should match your tone. I know it sounds a bit cryptic, but the crux of the matter is that we're all different and there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution here. If you're a 60 year old bear of a man with a deep voice and a grandfatherly look, by all means, play on that, but if you're a highly energetic 22-year old genderfluid wiz kid, you should probably go for a different approach! Find out what tone YOU feel comfortable with, and then develop that. Better be a speed-talking smurf (if that's you!) than someone trying to be a baritone, when they're really a falsetto. And once you find that tone of yours... THEN go all-out on making the most of it. :-)

I feel like there is no one right answer to how to effectively use tone as it is not one size fits all. What I can say however is that practice is key. Practicing your jokes, mulling over how you exclaim the big idea, and tweaking constantly as you say your speech out loud will help you find your own way of speaking and will most definitely help you apply it as it comes time to speak publicly. I have just begun my career of public speaking and time after time I am told to practice till it becomes second nature. When your speech is natural to you, you become a person and not a speaker. Bridging that gap only happens with tone and faking a tone that is received effectively is impossible but being authentic isn't!

Practicing tone is actually important too - in a private setting perhaps - to prepare for public speaking opportunities. I often find myself talking TOO MUCH with friends, but also I spent 10 years on stage performing improv shows, which allowed me to be all sorts of characters and practice all sorts of tones. Practice telling the same story with different goals in mind (keep it to yourself lol) and see how your different tones change the way the story is received. And keep that in mind for when you finally start public speaking!

Never use a sing-so g tone. Speak with a natural flow of words. Also, sometimes lowering the volume of speech can draw people in to listen more closely.

I would also like to emphasize the importance of PAUSES. The pause in a speech is crucial; it is what makes it unique and special. A public speech has a rhythm, and pauses are an integral part of it. They can emphasize a concept, make it comical, or leave room for the listener's imagination. They are like punctuation in a written text. And also, pauses are essential to be able to take a breath when speaking, which we so often forget to do....

Besonders einfach ist es durch das Spielen mit der Lautstärke die Aufmerksamkeit der Audienz zurückzugewinnen. Ein Tipp: Wenn du merkst, dass es langsam unruhiger und lauter im Publikum wird, dann werde nicht lauter, sondern leiser. Sobald du anfängst zu flüstern, steht die Chance gut, dass die Personen den Unterschied sofort bemerken und wieder anfangen genau zuzuhören um etwas zu verstehen. This is my biggest piece of advice for public speakers. When I took a class on Jazz history in college, we learned about Miles Davis and his famous pauses. That his moments of silence were just as important and powerful as the notes he played. One thing I've practiced over the years on stage was getting comfort with silence when all eyes are still on you. If and when you can get comfortable with silence, every other skill related to tone will be easier AND more powerful.

We could write essays on this topic but I'd say that one of the most important things to remember is that your voice is more than just volume. Try practicing rising intonation and falling intonation. Rising intonation: "And the winner is... Margot Robbie" Falling intonation: "And that is that" Use your hand to try and visualise your voice going up and down. It's actually much harder than you can imagine. It may be worth listening to the Oscars or a newsreader to appreciate how tone and intonation can change the way you sound.

A lot of what you learn about tone deals with breath, understanding the muscles of the throat and mouth, etc. Practice some of this with an expert, even if it's just a few lessons, to truly get good at controlling your volume, pitch, etc. When you build these skills, you can more actively choose how to deploy them depending on the desired impact of your presentation, etc.

One way to test how effective your speech is in real time is to actively include the audience in your presentation. Ask for questions DURING the presentation, for example. Or ask them to raise their hands in response to some question where everyone can participate. If too many people don't participate, it might mean that your presentation isn't as engaging as you'd like it to be. Better to know that in the beginning of the presentation and adjust accordingly than know later. You got this!!

For me it is important to look at the people in front of you, try to engage the audience not only with questions, but also with your presence, with your look. And to be authentic. In example if you make a mistake, well, don't try to hide it, but state it, and depending on the context, maybe even play with the mistake.

As you go through each line, how does it reinforce the final message? I find that once your draft feels cohesive, then work on practicing your tone. Find a speaker that you admire and listen to their tone. See what you can pull into your evolving speaking style.

maybe one more element to consider is the language... think about to be inclusive as much as possible, to reach the people, think about who is your audience and adapt your speech according to that.

Although, some speakers may attempt to pretend, nonetheless, a good listener with easily figure that out. Another thing your tone does as a public speaker is the ability to strike the likely cord in your audience. For instance, a tender tone is capable of arousing the emotional cord of listeners and it hence triggers the expected readiness.
