What are the steps to publish your book or book chapter?

Choosing a publisher and format The first step is to decide which publisher and format best suit your goals, audience, and discipline. You can research different publishers by browsing their websites, catalogues, and reviews, as well as asking for recommendations from your colleagues, mentors, and peers. You should also consider the type and scope of your book or book chapter, such as whether it is a monograph, an edited collection, a textbook, or a handbook. Before looking for a publisher, you need to decide how you wish to publish. Publishers are VERY choosy... most authors will never get a traditional deal. Most publishers only look at submissions from agents, so get one... easier said than done! Agents are probably more picky than publishers! We've all heard of authors receiving numerous rejections from publishers, even those who go on to success (think a famous wizard series!). It can be done, but you need perseverance and a thick skin. The alternative is to self-publish... which nowadays is perfectly acceptable, though you take the risk financially. But research carefully... there are many ways to self-publish, and choosing the right one for you is key to achieving your publishing goals.

Finding a publisher is really a milestone to achieve for the new writers. My thought on this is leaving no stone unturned and always keeping hope for the best match. Yes, publishers may have requirements and suggestions. However, the best part is sticking to the point that is unique; not trendy.

I think publishing a monograph, an edited book and a book chapter require quite different steps. While publishing a monograph, finding a publisher is the first step. For an edited book, the publishers usually want to see some work already done, more than just a proposal, because it is not easy to find, motivate, encourage, supervise and keep track of several authors. If you just want to be a contributor, not an editor; then networking and engaging with potential co-contributors and experienced editors is the first step.

When your book proposal is accepted most publishers will need you to sign a formal contract with them before the project starts.

Every publisher receives hundreds of manuscript proposals, if not more. What can make yours stand out is tailoring it to reflect why your book deserves to be out there. The publisher's style guide should be your go-to text; if a certain guideline is listed as optional, ensuring that you follow it may well make the difference. Your manuscript should have been pre-edited at least once, preferably by someone other than yourself, to remove any errant typographical oversights. As the veterans say, 'kill your darlings'; if a particularly well-crafted sentence does not fit the context of your manuscript, snip it out mercilessly.

Before you submit anything anywhere, write, re-write, re-write and check, then check again. Submitting anything with errors in just sets up additional hurdles to publication that you don't need! Make sure it's right before you submit.

It is important to keep in mind that publishers are looking for manuscripts that are well-written, engaging, and marketable. They are also looking for manuscripts that fit their publishing list.

It is of great luck if you can have qualified reviewers. Then you will receive additional value to your text and be able to improve it. Unfortunately, to often, reviewers follow cliche and have different ideas then you. When you receive that kind of review, ignore review or accept it so you can be published. It is up to you.

Keep your originality. In today's world, probably millions of people working on the same ideas as you do. In the sea of same texts, it is those who are exceptional that will be noticed. Other will be just published. Remember that we publish more then ever, but people read less then ever before. That trend will continue in the future.

The publishing industry is a commercial business, like any other, so be realistic about your manuscript. Is it commercial? Have you a target audience in mind? Publishers love authors to have more than one book, as it makes marketing the author brand easier down the line (assuming the first book is a success!). Bottom line is enjoy your writing, and if a commercial publisher doesn't come knocking, you can still self-publish your work (though be realistic about the number of copies you can sell).

To write a quality book needs time. But before that, you will need original idea. and even before that, you will have to spend years to learn about subject of you writing. Then maybe one day, some publisher will think you have interesting (read commercial profitable for selling) text. If you avoid all of this, I would kindly ask you to explain how.
