You want subcontractors to meet your safety standards. How can you ensure they do in industrial projects?

ONLY Sharing the policy doesn’t guarantee a single safe act. They will sign with big fat smile and let’s meet when sh*t hits the fan. Proper start is: Safety Charter as an integral part of the project charter, risk assessment & Method Statement; every single action in the contractor scope shall be addressed in this document then simulated on site (and this is non-negotiable). Depending on the job nature and the hazard analysis conducted by owner, number of safety officers on site should be pre-defined and the level of monitoring as well. Yet again, Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

A definição de uma boa política de segurança é fundamental. Quaisquer regulamentações, que apesar de serem públicas, devem ser citadas e comentadas sobre como será sua interpretação. Deve ser claro a todos o que é esperado e o que é intolerável na execução do contrato e como serão sanadas discordâncias. Canais de comunicação devem ser estabelecidos, assim como procedimentos comuns tais como gestão de emergências, por exemplo. Acima de tudo, deve ser estabelecida boa comunicação, que PRECISA ocorrer em bases de igualdade, alinhada ao objetivo comum de promoção da segurança.

Having a standard policy, specifying any applicable safety standards from trade associations or industry group, mandatory safety equipment and process, and even reporting/investigation procedures is a basic necessity today. Make sure that those policies include language for possible future additions or revisions, especially for projects with new technology or known difficult working conditions. But the most important aspect to a standard policy is: communicate inside your organization. Make sure it is clear, easy to comprehend and enforce as needed. Nothing is worse than subcontractor getting contradictory guidance from their employer. Not just confusion, but extra cost, extra time, and even extra work for your team may result.

In my experience getting subcontractors to meet your safety standards requires good communication, appropriate resource support, and auditing. Appropriate resource support may be directing them to information, connecting the subcontractor with a safety equipment provider, or providing examples of compliance. These three elements reflect a shared goal of protecting the most valuable resource, the human resource.

Comprehensive training programs are essential for both subcontractors and the entire company. Proper training is crucial as safety involves more than just processes and techniques; human error is a significant risk. Continuous training programs should include real-world scenario simulations, regular drills, and updates on security protocols and threats. A dedicated subcontractor program is necessary to address specific challenges. This thorough training reduces human error and ensures effective responses in critical situations. High training standards across the company ensure proficiency and quick decision-making, enhancing overall safety and compliance with the highest standards.

Programas de treinamentos devem ser criados e aplicados. Cada empresa tem suas características e mesmo trabalhando em uma empresa concorrente a a outra que trabalhou com produtos similares sempre irá existir algumas diferenças. Treinar um funcionário é melhor do que ficar trocando e o fato de fazer o investimento com treinamentos nos funcionários eles sempre irão crescer e ajudar . Sendo valorizado eles vão valorizar cada vez mais a empresa que acredita e investe em treinamentos

Percebo que muitas empresas exercem motivação para esse assunto, mas falta disciplina ou fica pelo caminho. Programas de treinamentos devem ser visitados periodicamente, ou seja, revisados e aplicados dentro de uma periodicidade. Comece pelo feito, pra depois ir para o perfeito.

É extremamente necessário atuar no campo do comportamento das pessoas, com orientações, conscientizações, feedbacks constantes junto aos colaboradores, terceiros, ou todos que estejam naquele momento envolvido com os processos industriais. É um trabalho de construção constante que não tem data para terminar.

Compliance checks fall into 2 bodies of work: Ad hoc and checklists. Ad hoc can be via a walkthrough by management, a supervisor noticing dangerous conditions, or even a co-worker calling out risky work. Checklists should be used daily to make sure no random item is missed. No compliance check should ever be scheduled or announced. Catch them as they really work, not as they say. But the part that comes next is important. Make sure the preventative measure that comes out of violations can be done. Too often, the knee jerk reaction is "don't do that", but ends up not being followed as it is not practical, or even possible. Be safe, but make sure they CAN be safe and productive.

Segurança não é opcional! E tem inicio antes mesmo do inicio de qualquer trabalho a ser realizado, iniciando com as integrações, desdobramento das regras de conduta, regulamento interno, entre tantos outros nomes de batismo que as organizações adotam, ou seja, agir com muito rigor quanto a esse tema, tendo como base principal da gestão o diálogo e conscientização constante junto as pessoas.

This is key to have subcontractors comply with not only the actions of a safety program, but the intent. Make sure it is clear when the subcontractor is first vetted that they agree to the basic safety regulations your company ALWAYS follows. And if they are being brought into a new project, verify any new standards and communicate that at the time of contractual signing. Trying to get a subcontractor to follow "pop-up" rules usually results in change orders to you, and if you can't pass the cost along, the costs add up quickly. Up front, clearly stated, and quickly communicated has the best chance of compliance. But only if you hold them to the collective set.

Subcontractors should have the opportunity to provide input on safety procedures, report hazards, and suggest improvements. Regular safety meetings and debriefs after incidents can be platforms for discussing safety concerns and sharing best practices

The best motivation is reviews. Audit and review the safety adherence performance and give feedback back periodically. Rate their performance and award best adhering teams. Parallelly run consequence as the factory is ours and the employees of subcontractor also to be given fair treatment.

O óbvio precisa ser dito, segurança em primeiro lugar. Tenho isso como base principal de gestão, sendo aplicado no contexto geral Industrial, com desdobramentos DDS juntos a todos que estejam no perímetro, diretos ou indiretos. Sistematizar é uma excelente maneira de trabalho, o que não substitui o walk the talk, ir para o genba e sentir por si próprio é necessário.
