Had the pleasure of reconnecting with my mentor of 20 years, Scott Budnick. He was very instrumental with the start of the Inside-Out Writers program, the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC), and the Production company 1Community; his efforts has led to a slew of changes in the California legal system as a result of his fight for reform. This man is the sole reason I decided to pursue a career in film; to him I'll forever be grateful! #1community #ARC #ProductionLife #ProductionAssistant #PAnation #PAofLA

I'm so honored to attend and speak at New Media Ventures (NMV) 2024 Summit: Powering the Collective. Loved CEO Carlissia N. Graham's opening: "This is a collective conversation about the future of media...How can we leverage innovation for the future of democracy? This is a convening of the right trouble makers for times like these." I was struck with themes of possible and positive futures shared throughout. A few nuggets of wisdom shared today include: The power of Fandom to be a "force multiplier" of narratives at scale connected to democracy and social change. Tracy Van Slyke from Pop Culture Collaborative (How many used the word "Brat" in the last 3 days?) Futurist Aditi Juneja's call for more visible and positive stories of a functioning multiracial democracy. She shared emerging research with Harmony Labs on analyzing the societal impact of authoritarian depictions of civic engagement in film and TV that feature political violence and dystopic plot lines just a few years before the insurrection. (No wonder a portion of the population didn't bristle after 1/6 insurrection...they've been watching seasons of "Scandal" and depictions of political violence for years.) "You need to know the narrative waters you are swimming in." And also appreciated her shout out to the positive narrative and pro-social power of the rise in women's sports: "This year it's become OK to be a women's sports fan." [Hell, Yes! cc: The Team] Tori Kyes, MBA from Haus Influentia is creating the largest sustainable Jazz festival in LA this August as way to uplift communities and the environment, "You can still be dramatic and get attention without ruining democracy...We have to write checks for creative formats that are not doom and gloom." Phillip Sanders riveting fireside chat with Charles D. King: "My super power is seeing talent in others...not just directors and artists, but executives, too. Find them and support them. Help bring the right people together. Our company is called MACRO...we're pushing forward towards a common goal. I'm also going to adopt The Nation of Artists founder Elliot Katek's model of 6 A's for thinking through projects: What is the AIM and AMBITION of the project? Is there ALIGNMENT on goals? Who are our ALLIES and AMBASSADORS? What are your ASSETS? What is your ASK? Loved Rachel E. Cooke from 1Community's closing line: "Our imagination is the best tool for liberation." (h/t to Ahmed Best on this one, too!) And, finally, a huge shout out to Brea Baker for moderating with incredible energy, clarity and uplifting passion for the content and conversations. It takes true talent to integrate a mini group dance party stretch break with such grace, humor and connective tissue. Excited for Day 2 tomorrow, and the opportunity to share more about the Civic Imagination and Futures Happening work we've been piloting The Stanford d.school!

Yesterday, some of our 1C staff had the opportunity to join This is About Humanity's PRIDE bus trip to Tijuana. We bore witness to testimonials from our guests from the shelter for unaccompanied minor children @casaymca_mx and LGBTQIA+ migrant shelter Casa Jardin de las Mariposas. We prepped meals with the collective food relief kitchen This is About Humanity has with Fundacion Tijuana Sin Hambre @icfdn, currently serving 3,100 meals a day to 19 shelters, and on track to distributing one million meals a year. We also celebrated Pride by gathering at an LGBTIA+ shelter for migrants and families seeking refuge. We danced bachata, made friendship bracelets and observed the mobile mental health unit in action run by their partners @centro32mx which travels to 12 shelters supporting over 350 children, teens, parents and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. These experiences were deeply moving and served as a powerful reminder of the resilience and spirit of the communities we look to serve in our storytelling. As we continue our efforts, we are inspired by the strength and solidarity displayed by everyone involved. #pridemonth #giveback foto cred: IG: ph.silviadelrincon #ThisisAboutHumanity
