About us

Founded in 1906, ours is one of the oldest and most established architectural firms in California. 19six Architecture, formerly known as PMSM Architecture, first entered the architecture industry over a century ago when A.B. Higginson, an architect and designer in his own right, saw major flaws in the design and structure of local buildings and wanted to improve their quality. What began as a local business in Santa Barbara has since grown into an architecture firm known across California for their award-winning design excellence and commitment to community impact. Our work includes K-12 and Higher Education, Healthcare, Performing Arts, Civic, and Master Planning, as well as architectural and planning services. For over a century, we have served as an extension of our clients, working with them to design dozens of buildings to foster communities and growth. 19six Architects is creating new office facilities for the City of Roseville’s Plant Engineers and public reception areas. The single-story structure has an angled roof design to trace the path of the sun. The design concept “visual transparency” meant bringing natural daylight throughout the building. The durable construction on the exterior is carried throughout interior that supports staff and public interface. Exposed polished concrete, porcelain tile, quartz countertops, and acoustical materials made from 80% post-consumer recycled water bottles help highlight the importance of sustainable infrastructure. A new reception welcomes guests to the plant. Large format digital graphics are scaled up to help draw your eyes up to the west-facing clerestory windows. The programming allows for public meeting spaces, breakroom sanctuary, and cozy bunk rooms for overnight staff.

This year’s IIDA Northern California #MERGE2024 fashion show theme was Time Capsule Couture. This annual scholarship fundraiser paired interior building materials manufacturers with 12 architecture firms. Donated building materials are used to fabricate wildly creative ensembles inspired by different eras in history. The 19six team spent several volunteer hours creating a vision of ‘The Future’ that effortlessly merges modern aesthetics with classic elegance. This year’s theme inspired a leather-based dress crafted with Spinneybeck leather, intricately laced with Armstrong World Industries aircraft cable for a bold touch. The design focused on convertible style, allowing the wearer to transform it from a polished look into a flowy silhouette. For those looking to make a statement, vibrant layers of 3form and colorful Architex Fabrics add an eye-catching flair. The garment also featured unique tiles from Porcelanosa and unbacked J+J Flooring carpet tiles, adding texture and personality. Our firm’s commitment to sustainability shines through these eco-friendly materials and ethical production practices, ensuring that each piece looks stunning and contributes positively to the planet. Here’s to a ‘Future’ where elegance meets purpose in style.

Our annual Rib Cook-Off was a sizzlin' success! This event brought together 10 teams of talented grill masters to our Roseville office, who put their heart and soul into crafting the most tender and flavorful ribs. A big thank you to everyone who participated, supported, and savored the results of this friendly but fierce competition. We look forward to seeing even more amazing talent and delicious dishes next year!

As part of AIA Central Valley’s Experience Architecture 2024, Terry Green & Stephen Ullman from our 19six Housing Studio, along with Heller Pacific, Inc. and Brown Construction, Inc., unveiled the DIGGS project in Downtown Sacramento. Attendees were brought up to speed on the creative transformation of the Thompson Diggs building, once an office space, on its way to becoming vibrant housing. It was an insightful conversation on how reimagining existing spaces can tackle housing shortages, breathe new life into historically industrial zones, and champion sustainability—all while preserving the unique character of our urban neighborhoods.
