360 Military-Veterans Partnership: Making the Strong, Stronger!

On this day in history, 17 August 1942, US Marine Raiders attack Makin Atoll in the Gilbert Islands. The 2nd Marine Raider Battalion under the command of Lt. Col. Evans Carlson made the nine-day journey from Hawaii to Makin in WWI-era submarines. The raid was mostly a diversion from the Guadalcanal campaign, trying to keep the Japanese from sending reinforcements. However, documents and charts captured from the main Japanese outpost on Makin provided invaluable information to American intelligence, including battle orders, defense maps, and emergency operation plans. Although the atoll was not strategically important, the raid on Makin provided insights and information which would impact the rest of the Pacific War. A movie titled “Gung Ho” was made in December 1943 about the Makin Island Raiders, and the Chinese phrase meaning “working together” was adopted as the slogan for Carlson’s Raiders. The expression eventually came to the popular language to mean “enthusiastic” or “dedicated,” evoking the spirit and determination of the men who raided Makin Atoll in 1942. August 14th is National Navajo Code Talkers Day! This Image is of a Japanese map case displayed in our George H.W. Bush Gallery. This map case was used by Navajo code-talker Carl Gorman during WWII. In 1942, Carl Gorman lied to join a special group for which he was too old. Gorman heard that the Marines wanted Navajos for "special duty". To qualify for this special group you had to be younger than 30 to be eligible. At that time Navajos didn't have records of their ages. Even so, Carl knew that he was older than 30, but he lied and said that he was 28 so that he could join. He later learned that the "special duty" was to become a "Code Talker". He was one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers. Throughout WWII, the Navajo code remained unbroken. Carl Gorman later became an artist and is the father of renowned Navajo artist R.C. Gorman. His paintings are primarily of Native American women. He has been referred to as "the Picasso of American Indian artists" by The New York Times. Like many of you, I have along “never forget” list. Each and every one of them special and deserving of our gratitude. I also think of the ones left behind to carry the burden of a lost loved one. At 360MVP I’ve had the privilege of getting to know and serve three great ladies: gold star spouses. 360mvp has been honored to sponsor attendance for each in our life changing Leader 360 course. And each has made their own contributions to the program and our non profit each are 360 Family. I’ll start with Barbara Arizmendez. I had the honor of escort Barbara and her family as we laid Marc to rest in section 60. Marc was vehicle mechanic, dedicated to keeping “the vehicles rolling”. He was killed in Afghanistan on patrol to recover a down vehicle when his was struck by a deep buried IED. Barbara has done an amazing job raising their children. Marc and Barbara’s son Justin, is a combat medic currently deployed to Syria and their daughter, Jenny is doing well in college. Barbara gives back by participating in our leader 360 course, “spirituality panel” discussion where she shares her story and her unique insights for how leaders should engage with the spouses of their fallen buddies and honor their own grieving process. Amber Hockman has a very heartbreaking but important story. Her husband, Bob, an Army Major with three combat tours, died by suicide. His death was ruled combat related. But, his commander ordered that anyone attending his service was not allowed to wear their uniform because, he believed, the way Bob died, dishonored the uniform. What that commander didn’t consider was the message he sent and the impact on Bob’s family. Amber is an incredibly strong woman who shares her message of Soldier suicide during many of our Leader 360 Courses, helping untold numbers of leaders. Finally, the story behind our 360 Leadership award. SGT Danny Quintana was in the very first Leader 360° Course we delivered in March 2010, soon after he deployed to Afghanistan. On 10 Sep, his platoon made contact with the enemy and Danny stood to lead his team forward. As he stood and said, “follow me”, he was struck by an enemy bullet. Danny was resuscitated a few times before being loaded onto a medevac flight, sadly he died of his wound while enroute to hospital. Three months later, his widow Nilda, alone in the hospital gave birth to their daughter, Adriana. Thanks to a 360MVP member, who had Nilda’s contact info we were able to reconnect on Memorial Day, 2018. In January, she and Adriana were able to joined us in San Antonio when we recognized the 50th recipient of the Danny Quintana Memorial Leadership award. Later, Nilda was able to attend a Leader 360° Course and serves as a director on the 360MVP Board of Directors representing Gold Star Families. On this Memorial Day we remember the sacrifice of each of these ladies and the service they have and continue to provide. At 360 MVP, we Never Forget!

A common practice and leadership trait in great leaders is taking the time to develop the employee. Becoming a great leader is not bestowed automatically, but rather shapened over a period of time. When we invest in people and share all of the knowledge and skills required to make decisions or even how to skillfully reason to reveal an intended outcome, in essence we are creating the best rendition of our greater selves as leaders. #BusinessCharacterMatters

Another Memorial Day is here and for all of you like me who have had the privilege of leading and agony of losing Soldiers In combat, it is a special time to remember, honor and feel the pain of their loss and the love of those left behind. I expect, like me you have “never forget” dates: 14 Feb, David Sallie (KIA, OIF), 14 April, Scott Spellmon (WIA, OIF), 6 Nov, Joel Cahill (KIA, OIF), 8 Nov SFC Alwyn Cashe(KIA, OIF), 6 July, Marc Arizmendez (KIA, OEF)… among too many others. God bless each one of them and their Families. Never Forget! While we live with these pains, each the result of combat action, for every one we lost, since four more died by suicide. And, we continue to lose the fight against the epidemic of Soldier suicide. In my humble opinion, most the result of a leadership failure. This pain is preventable. At 360 Military-Veterans Partnership: Making the Strong, Stronger! we see the stories of childhood trauma, relationship failures, financial challenges, sexual assault and harassment, alcohol and substance abuse, suicide. Each of these pains me and I expect it does you too. At 360 we fortify the well-being and resilience of the backbone of our military, our NCO leaders. We - with your support - are able to provide them free lifetime services and support. As we remember, let’s not forget those serving and struggling every day to care for our nation’s treasure; the sons and daughters and protectors of the American people.
