Martina Gugliermino, David Rodriguez-Duarte, Jorge Tobon-Vasquez and Francesca Vipiana, members of 3BAtwin from POLITO, published a new scientific paper on IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters (AWPL). The paper “On the Use of an Electromechanical and a Solid-State Switching Matrix for a Portable Microwave-Based Brain Stroke Scanner” examines the effects of the switching matrix on a multiview and low-complexity portable microwave imaging system for brain stroke monitoring. 📢 Today, on the 4th of February, we celebrate the World Cancer Day! This day aims to promote global awareness and encourage cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. ID/Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa and David Rodriguez-Duarte from Politecnico di Torino attended the 1st IEEE Latin American Conference on Antennas and Propagation in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, during the first week of December. ✨ Both organised and chaired a special session entitled "Advancements in Electromagnetic-based Medical Techniques and Devices", covering topics of interest for 3BAtwin. 🗣️ On the 19th of October, our Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication Officer, Daniela Godinho, presented 3BAtwin at the 16th Workshop on Biomedical Engineering (WBME) at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (CIÊNCIAS). This workshop is annually organised by the Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics students of CIÊNCIAS and brings together professors, researchers and students of the Department of Physics for talks and poster sessions related to Biomedical Engineering topics. 🔎 In this presentation, Daniela Godinho provided an overview of Medical Microwave Imaging, the ongoing research topics under investigation at FCiências. 📢 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and today is the National Breast Cancer Day in Portugal! 🔎 The research group in Instituto de Biofísica e Engenharia Biomédica - Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering, the research institute part of the coordinator institution of 3BAtwin (FCiências. ID/Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa), led by Raquel Conceição has been studying breast cancer diagnosis and staging using medical microwave imaging. 📡 Breast and axillary microwave imaging has the potential to be used as a screening modality as it does not use ionising radiation and it is cost-efficient. Unlike traditional mammography, microwave imaging is comfortable for all breast sizes as it does not require breast compression. This technology is also non-invasive and easy to operate! ✨ 3BAtwin will also enhance the research in breast care and development of prototypes for this promising imaging technique. 🧠 Today is World Stroke Day! The Wavision Research Group, part of one of the beneficiaries of 3BAtwin (Politecnico di Torino) and led by Francesca Vipiana, has been conducting research towards brain stroke diagnosis and monitoring using microwave technology. 📡 Microwave imaging has the potential to aid stroke diagnosis as it is based on the dielectric contrast between the healthy tissues and stroke affected zones. This technology is safe, potentially real-time, cost-efficient, easy to operate and also portable! ✨ 3BAtwin will also contribute to this research field. 🚀 Last week, on the 2nd and 3rd of October, we held our Kick-off Meeting, bringing together 29 participants, including researchers, administrators, and students from FCiências. ID (FC. ID), Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (CIÊNCIAS-ULisboa), University of Galway (GALWAY) and Politecnico di Torino (POLITO). Of the attendees, 25 participated in-person and 4 joined online. ✨ The first day focused on providing an overview of the project and its work packages, as well as assigning leaders and setting key dates for the activities of the upcoming three years. To foster team building and create opportunities for getting to know one another, FC. ID organised an ice breaker activity and a social dinner. During the day, POLITO and GALWAY also had the chance to visit Instituto de Biofísica e Engenharia Biomédica - Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering laboratories. ✨On the second day, representatives from the three institutions (FC. ID /CIÊNCIAS, GALWAY and POLITO) presented their ongoing research. The day concluded with a visit to TecLabs, the CIÊNCIAS incubator, offering participants insights into its innovation ecosystem. 😄 Thank you to everyone who joined!
