A Home Away From Homelessness (Home Away or HA) seeks to radically alter the trajectory of our students’ lives by providing a safe and supportive environment that fosters their individual strengths, creativity and abilities. Home Away strives to break the cycle of homelessness and hopelessness for young people in San Francisco and Marin. Our mission is to give homeless children and youth a respite from the ravages of abuse, neglect, and poverty to forge a new future. This is done by focusing on addressing the needs of the whole child. We strive not only to improve the academic performance of these youths, but also to immerse them in a structured, adventurous, supportive community that fosters a healthy mind, healthy body, healthy spirit, and healthy community. Home Away was founded in 1994 in partnership with the National Park Service as a respite for homeless children living in shelters. Each year, Home Away serves more than 250 homeless and formerly homeless children and their families in Marin, San Francisco, and Oakland.

Home Away sends a big thanks to the PG&E team for lending a helping hand at our Beach House 💐😊 Thanks to them, we’ve got ready garden beds for children to experiment with planting and an organized kitchen that will make our chefs job so much easier. They’re all gonna be so excited when they see the place. This was perfect timing. What a fabulous start to the year!

Our students have grown up with significant trauma—including homelessness and domestic violence. At Home Away we alter the trajectory of these most vulnerable and underserved youth through academic assistance, social and emotional support, and the commitment of caring adults who value each of these kids as an individual with huge potential. The results have been dramatic: HomeAway serves over 25 students each year and, because of their involvement in the program, six of them are now flourishing as college students. The design of education has recently become a political conversation, while many students are still feeling left behind and in search of safe spaces in their classroom. In this week’s episode, we are joined by Michael Funk, Director of the Expanded Learning Division for the California Department of Education.💜 In collaboration with a highly diverse group of educators and practitioners, Mr. Funk developed a strategic plan known as “A Vision for Expanded Learning”. Find out how this plan focuses on four initiatives to support the direct needs of students seeking quality programming from educators who truly seek to build a relationship with their students, while also encouraging them to seek careers in fields such as Education and Social Work.🧡 Mr. Funk oversees over $800 million in state and federal grants supporting over 4,500 afterschool programs, serving over 900,000 children and teens statewide. He also leads the newly created $4 billion Expanded Learning Opportunities Program, which funds every local educational agency in California. Under his leadership and vision, a statewide system of support, comprised of members of the CDE, County Offices of Education, and statewide contracted technical assistance providers, was borne and continues to thrive and evolve through a partnership with the Center for Systems Awareness, and the introduction of the Compassionate Systems Framework. Prior to his role at CDE, he founded the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center in San Francisco in 1996. Mr. Funk was invited to Washington DC to brief the entire US Senate education staff on the SNBC community schools model. Mr. Funk has long-championed Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in the state of California, touting the need for transformational versus transactional leadership, and living by the mantra: Learn – Lead – Love.
