From ground zero on Sept. 11, 2001, and the battlefields of Iraq to earthquake-shattered Haiti and the Oval Office, Scott Pelley has been on the frontlines of history throughout his nearly 50-year journalism career. As a 60 MINUTES correspondent and former anchor of the CBS Evening News, Pelley has collected countless stories of people from all walks of life, and among the many lessons he’s learned is the importance of keeping an open mind. “We all like to be told that what we already believe is correct, that we needn't think any more than we have, and that our beliefs needn't be challenged in any way,” Pelley told AAMCNews. “That's a terrible thing for a democracy.” Read more: https://ow.ly/8n2c50TVEFH Pelley will kick off Learn Serve Lead 2024 (#AAMC24) in Atlanta on Nov. 9 with a plenary session where he will share his insights as the country reckons with the aftermath of Election Day.

Deborah Kuhls, MD, coordinated a surgical team’s treatment of victims in the largest mass shooting in U.S. history – at the Las Vegas music festival in 2017. The next day, she attended a debriefing where surgical staff talked about the emotional impact. “We spent two or three hours talking about how we were doing. Some people seemed fine; some had a hard time talking about it.” Doctors who have responded to mass shootings say that debriefings – either in groups led by senior staff or in private conversations with colleagues – played a big role in helping them cope with distress and emerge stronger. In this text and video story, Kuhls and five other extraordinary doctors talk with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) about pulling together in the moment, working through the aftermath, and settling into a new but different normal. Health equity cannot be achieved by medical care alone. Social and political factors greatly impact the health of communities, including the places where they live, work, and play. As part of their commitment to engage diverse perspectives, the AAMC Center for Health Justice convened with leaders from in and outside health care and #AcademicMedicine to identify health equity issues facing Americans. What do you think they identified as the most pressing issue?
