Regional public colleges are not often thought of as hubs for international engagement, yet a number have quietly carved out their own places in global education. Here’s how. In this week's Latitudes, I look at American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) institutions that have developed international strategies that reflect their distinct profiles, such as emphasizing lower tuition costs or strong employer connections to appeal to budget-conscious foreign students. Also, Cornell University has reversed a decision to revoke the visa of an international student suspended for his part in pro-Palestinian protests on campus, which could have forced him to leave the country. And a college in the Palestinian West Bank has won a global prize for civic engagement. #internationaleducation #intled #internationalstudents #studyabroad #educationabroad #regionalcolleges #studentvisa #campusprotests #civicengagement #highereducation #highered

Congratulations to the nearly two dozen AASCU members who earned the 2024 Seal of Excelencia, a national certification from Excelencia in Education for institutions that "strive to go beyond enrollment to intentionally SERVE Latino students." We’re proud to celebrate these institutions that have demonstrated their commitment to Latino student success. For some, it's their first year earning the #ExcelenciaSeal, while others earned recertification. On this #Indigenous Peoples' Day, AASCU proudly celebrates Abigail Echo-Hawk, recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Alumnus Award. A two-time University of Washington Bothell graduate, Echo-Hawk earned her Bachelor of Arts in American Studies in 2007 and a Master of Arts in Policy Studies in 2009. As director of the Urban Indian Health Institute and executive vice president of the Seattle Indian Health Board, she is a fierce advocate for Indigenous justice and equity in public health. Her leadership has driven transformative changes, particularly in addressing the representation of Indigenous communities in data and raising awareness of violence against Native American women. At #AASCU24, we will formally recognize Echo-Hawk and thank her for her continued impact in advancing Indigenous justice and public health as this year's DAA recipient! #HigherEd #IndigenousPeoplesDay2024

It was an incredible day at the United Nations discussing higher education and the workforce at the GlobalMindEDorg convening. I was honored to serve on a panel with people like my friend, former Secretary of Education, and The State University of New York Chancellor John King. Nevada State University was committed to addressing the state's growing teacher shortages and the university’s relatively flat undergraduate enrollment in its education program.
