Universal Robots Struggles to Find System Integrators to Support Growth By George Chowdhury | 30 Oct 2024 | IN-7579 As intuitive User Interfaces (UIs) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) work to increase #robot accessibility, a dearth of System Integrators (Sis) is causing the industry to stall. Robots offer significant efficiency advantages to Small and Medium Enterprises for applications such as machine tending, picking, and welding, but vendors struggle to contract enough SIs to scale. Since Universal Robots’ (UR) launch of the first #cobot in 2008, the established industrial robot Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), sensing a sea change and not wanting to be left behind, have been quick to develop collaborative product lines. The robotics OEMs have had fair success with their collaborative products, but this revenue pales compared to the upstart UR, which held a market share of some 50% up until 2022. Industrial OEMs have also enjoyed success by partnering with Computer Numerical Control machine manufacturers (several, notably FANUC America Corporation, manufacture their own) and offering off-the-shelf machine tending solutions. The client base for cobots in automated manufacturing will soon saturate. While cobots handle tasks like inline inspection and end-of-line processing, they can't replace industrial robots due to limitations in precision, speed, and payload. To expand their market, OEMs must pivot to serve smaller organizations, but with cobots contributing minimally to revenue, they have shown little interest in this segment. Meanwhile, industrial robots remain central to manufacturing, making OEMs hesitant to address SI shortages for smaller deployments. In contrast, cobot startups like UR rely on partner networks, allowing them to lead robotics innovation for SMEs without direct deployment. Through UR’s adaptable PolyScope interface, partners develop niche products that address specific needs in logistics and manufacturing. Partnering with UR is appealing for startups, as UR offers robust distribution and support networks, accessible APIs, and modular hardware. However, as solutions become more complex, challenges arise. UR’s partners must recruit specialized engineering teams for installation and maintenance, as turnkey solutions in robotics remain rare. The diversity of cobot solutions also creates maintenance issues—engineers familiar with one partner's product may not know how to handle another, adding complexity and limiting third-party SI involvement, which hinders growth for cobot startups.
