Able SC is a disability-led organization transforming systems, communities, and individuals.
About us
Able SC is a disability-led organization seeking transformational changes in systems, communities, and individuals. Since 1994, we’ve remained a consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability nonprofit that seeks to make South Carolina a national model of equity and inclusion for all people with disabilities. We are the state’s oldest and largest federally recognized disability-led organization. More than 3/4 of our staff are people with disabilities, as are over half of our Board of Directors. We practice coequality, disability justice and representation, and true inclusion through consumer-driven independence and disability pride. We didn’t just learn this. As people with disabilities, our work doesn’t end when we leave the office. Disability is part of who we are. We live this every day.

It's Julia's 7 years at Able SC! Julia is a Community Work Incentives Coordinator. She provides benefits counseling to people with disabilities who receive Social Security benefits and want to know how working impacts their benefits and helps them become more self-sufficient. As a proud disabled person with Cerebral Palsy, her expertise is personal, "As someone who has experienced employment discrimination challenges with navigating employment, due to my disability and people's assumptions about my ability to work, equal employment and employment related causes will always be something that is important to me." Julia works from our Columbia office. PROUD ABLE MOMENT. When she is not working, Julia loves to try out adaptive sports, "This summer I went rock climbing for the first time!" We asked what keeps her coming back to work each day, "Working when you have a disability can be challenging enough. The additional stress that people receiving disability-based benefits from Social Security experience can be a significant barrier to work. Teaching those who receive benefits about Social Security regulations, work incentives, and other policies is a substantial part of my role. I like that I help people figure out how to navigate these systems and provide information about their situation, making the whole process much less scary. As a result, people can make informed decisions about their career and financial goals! My favorite thing about what I do is seeing the consumers I work with gain confidence In their decisions regarding their work. It's wonderful seeing individuals get so excited after they realize what they're capable of!" #DisabiltyEmployment #WorkAnniversary #Celebrate #NDEAM [Graphic with light blue background and photos of Julia, a white woman with long brown hair smiling. Centered light green bar with gray text reads ‘7 Years, Julia Hartman, Community Work Incentives Coordinator.’ The gray text above on the blue background quotes her from the post. 30th Able SC logo is in the bottom left corner.]
