About us
The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District is the third-largest public bus system in California, serving 13 cities and adjacent unincorporated areas in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. AC Transit has been serving the East Bay since 1960, taking over from the Key System and its predecessors, which carried passengers via buses, horse-drawn rail, electric streetcars, and ferries over the previous 100 years. AC Transit’s mission is to provide safe, convenient, courteous, and reliable transit service.

The Realign Final Network Plan was approved by AC Transit’s Board of Directors on Wednesday! Realign is an equity-focused review of all bus lines, designed to address significant shifts in ridership and commuting patterns since the pandemic. The plan sought extensive public engagement, and had over 1,200 touchpoints recorded throughout AC Transit's service areas. The plan will be implemented as early as Spring 2025. We have launched the nation’s first transit-collegiate partnership, Zero Emission Bus University (ZEBU), which will pave the way for innovative learning in zero emission transit! The groundbreaking partnership with Chabot College allows our maintenance trainers to serve as instructors for the college district. This unique collaboration enables apprentices to earn credits towards an Associates degree. We were awarded Lo-No grants in 2023 and 2024, totaling more than $40.5 million, which will allow us to transform our training center into a state-of-the-art ZEBU facility and add to our ZEB fleet. Thanks to the Federal Transit Administration and Deputy Administrator Veronica Vanterpool for being on-hand as we celebrated this landmark program.
