Excited to share some thoughts from two AcademyHealth advocacy blogs I wrote over the summer on the nexus between climate change and health services research. The shifting legal landscape following the Supreme Court's reversal of the Chevron doctrine and increased partisanship on environmental protection and climate issues thwart national efforts to advance policies to safeguard health under the threat of climate change. Despite these challenges, climate change-related health hazards are not going anywhere. Climate and environment-related hazards are increasingly impacting health systems and exacerbating poor health outcomes for historically marginalized populations. As a board member of the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network (NCEJN) climate justice is an important issue to me. Climate justice and health system resiliency go hand in hand. In partnership with community-based organizations and community leaders, the health services research (HSR) community can help ensure health systems have the right tools to make effective and evidence-informed decisions to promote health under climate threats. The HSR community plays an important role in identifying strategies to make our health systems resilient in the face of climate change. Two questions that come up for me when thinking about my role as a health services researcher interested in health policy and climate justice are the following: What kind of health do we want to be attainable in our lifetimes? What kind of health do we want to be attainable for future generations? Working on this topic was one of the many highlights of my time as a Health Policy Fellow at AcademyHealth this summer. And many thanks to Josh A. Caplan, for encouraging me to write about this and providing helpful guidance on advocacy communication. Read the two-part blog series here: https://lnkd.in/d3CxQPvZ
