  • Many of us find it challenging to develop and deliver a presentation. Are you providing facts and logic to support a recommendation the audience agrees on? Are you making an argument about the best way to solve a problem? Are you telling a story to highlight a challenge or teach a lesson? And now, of course, there is also the question of whether that presentation should be delivered in-person only, virtual only, or in a hybrid environment. In the latest module of the ACC NCR Leadership Academy, faculty member Jeanine Turner, Associate Professor at Georgetown University and Affiliate Professor at Georgetown's McDonough School of Business, explained how to plan, craft, and deliver persuasive and compelling presentations, how to decide on the "where," and how to keep listeners engaged with nonverbals like gestures and eye contact. Many thanks to Board of Advisors members Alice Givens, Senior VP, Chief Legal, Ethics and Compliance Officer and Corporate Secretary, LL Flooring, and Jesse Raben (He/His/Him), Chief Legal and Risk Officer, Breakthrough T1D, for sharing how they have refined their presentation skills over the course of their careers, and to Academy Steering Committee members Margaret Everson-Fisher '18, Associate General Counsel, Freddie Mac, and Brittany SmithShimer '23, Manager, Legal Affairs and Counsel, for their insights into how they have applied the pointers from this module. Thanks also to Vinson & Elkins, our host for this Module, for its support of the Academy, with special appreciation to Jamie Tabb and the meetings and events staff.  #persuasivepresentations #WhatIsYourTheme #Virtual-InPerson-Hybrid #NonVerbals #CommunicatingInformationIsPresenting

  • Join #ACCNCR and Baker Tilly US for ACC NCR Roundtable: Assessing and Implementing Government Contractor Business Systems: An In-House Counsel View, July 31, 2024 // 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM EDT // Tower Club in Tysons, 8000 Towers Crescent Dr., Suite 1700, Vienna, VA. Yielding business system responsibility to an organization’s functional owners feels easy and logical. Finance owns the accounting system, right? The same goes for Supply Chain and the Procurement system? However, Legal plays a pivotal role in evaluating the design and effectiveness of business systems to mitigate future risks. This reduces the chances of an irritated or skeptical customer, potential withheld billings on DOD contracts, or even suspension/inability to bid of future opportunities. In this roundtable, our panelists will address topics surrounding Legal’s role in system implementations such as Accounting, Procurement, and Earned Value Management, including: - Typical Legal requirements surrounding various business systems; - Legal’s input and signoffs in traditional design, implementation, and testing milestones of a system implementation; - Common implementation risks and approaches to mitigate those risks while considering schedule, resources, and scope implications; and - Advisable internal and external customer communications during significant business infrastructure changes. Presented by Derek Boyd, CPA, Partner at Baker Tilly, Heather M. G., Chief Administrative Officer at Integral Federal, and Eric P. Roberson, Government Contracts Compliance Counsel at Booz Allen Hamilton. Agenda: 4:00-5:30 pm – Roundtable 5:30-7:00 pm – Happy hour  This program is for informational purposes only, no CLE will be offered. Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/dmskFYki

  • ◾ What: Rocky Times for Office Landlords Require Careful Due Diligence by Tenants ◾ More Info: These are rocky times for many office landlords. Office valuations continue to decline, interest rates remain high and office vacancy rates are nowhere near their pre-pandemic levels. Commercial loan maturities are looming, with approximately $1.2 trillion in loans maturing in 2024-2025. Seventeen percent of those maturing loans are secured by commercial office buildings. In the face of these distressing circumstances, it is critical for tenants that will be signing new leases or entering into lease term extensions (New Leases) to investigate the financial stability and operational track record of their landlords. The key is to determine whether the landlords are financially stable or if they are experiencing distress due to one or more of these challenges and, if so, what protections may be pursued to safeguard that the landlords will perform their New Lease obligations. ◾ Read several due diligence considerations that tenants should assess before committing to a New Lease by Gold Sponsor Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP by clicking here: https://lnkd.in/dyAScfkC

  • Join #ACCNCR and Thompson Hine LLP for Benefit Plan Governance: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You, July 25 // 12:30 PM-2:00 PM // Via Webcast. With the barrage of issues facing in-house counsel on a day-to-day basis, responsibility for the operation and compliance of a company’s employee benefit plans can sometimes be an afterthought or viewed as being primarily the responsibility of service providers. However, federal law imposes strict requirements on the conduct of company employees who oversee service providers and benefit plan implementation and administration. The best way to ensure compliance with these requirements is to maintain a good governance structure that both facilitates a prudent process in making decisions regarding benefit plans and ensures that sufficient details of that process are documented. As the plaintiffs’ bar and federal regulators expand their focus to health and welfare plans, while maintaining a strong focus on retirement plans, now is the time to review and, if necessary, improve your governance structures.  Join us as we share practical recommendations regarding governance of retirement and health and welfare plans, and success stories of implementation. Presented by Dominic DeMatties and Katie Burgess Kohn, partners at Thompson Hine LLP, together with Susan Walker, ERISA and Benefits Counsel at Allstate Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/dyAzq4TX
