“If you don’t diagnose it, you can’t treat it.” - Kamala Harris Regardless of political affiliation, we need leaders who understand and are committed to addressing childhood trauma as a public health issue. Early detection and early intervention are CRITICAL for improving outcomes for our kids. While we can’t rewrite the past, we can use it to inform us on how to move forward. That’s what screening for ACEs does. It gives us, as providers, the opportunity to understand how our patient’s experiences in the past might affect the functioning of their biology in the present. ACE screening helps assess the likelihood that the toxic stress response may be contributing to a patient’s chronic medical, behavioral or mental health conditions.
