Avanzar en la extracción, separación y producción de aleaciones especiales es fundamental para el progreso de industrias críticas como la medicina, la robótica, la aviación y la informática, entre otras. Según señala la académica Mureji Fatunde en su artículo publicado en MIT Technology Review, se espera que la demanda de estos minerales aumente entre tres y siete veces para 2040, en un mercado actualmente dominado por China. Chile tiene la oportunidad de transformarse en un importante proveedor de estos minerales a nivel global. Aclara's COO Barry Murphy talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company’s latest progress toward becoming a vertically integrated rare earths producer. Barry highlighted the completion of a conceptual engineering study for Aclara's rare earths separation facility, conducted in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) and Hatch. The results of this study have positioned Aclara as a potential leader outside of Asia in heavy rare earth production. "The recoveries associated specifically with the heavy rare earths are all north of 90%, so that's really good news," commented Barry. He also discussed how the study's estimated capital expenditure of $354 million underscores the company’s commitment to reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact.
