Key Insights from the Rapid + TCT Additives Show: Understanding the Low Adoption of Metal 3D Printing in Tooling and Production and how Actco can help bring Additive mainstream. One of the key takeaways is that 3D printing serves as a critical tool with applications across multiple sectors. Approximately 40% of new product development including R&D uses 3D printing. Tooling: Adoption is significantly lower, with only 1% of tooling utilizing 3D printing to build needed components. Production Work: The adoption rate drops even further, with just 0.05% of production work involving 3D printing. Small lot sizes and complex geometries are opportunities where a 3D-printed part may be a more cost-effective approach to get you the needed parts. While it is easy to understand why 3D printing is prevalent in prototyping—due to its rapid turnaround times and cost-effectiveness in creating complex geometries—the reasons for its low adoption in tooling and production are more nuanced. Trust in Materials, Processes, and Outputs are some of the primary reasons for the low adoption rates in tooling and production. Here's a deeper dive into these concerns: Material Properties and Consistency: Traditional manufacturing processes, such as casting and machining, have well-established standards for material properties and performance. In contrast, metal 3D printing materials are relatively new, and there are lingering doubts about their mechanical properties, durability, and consistency. Actco uses proven materials to get consistent results in component output, And if needed we’ll use the expertise in our team and network of experts to get that part consistency you’ve come to expect from us if you choose to use an unproven material.   Process Reliability: Metal 3D printing processes, such as selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam melting (EBM), involve complex thermal and mechanical dynamics. Achieving repeatability and consistency in these processes has proven to be challenging in the past. This is why we chose our Xact Metal XM200G the part density is greater than 99% with no post-processing requirements. This means the part could be used off the machine and some materials can be machined and polished to achieve an A1 finish. The powdered materials on the market today can be in the tool steel range starting at 38-42 RC and can reach greater than 52 RC after being heat treated which Actco can do onsite. When it comes to precision and tolerance, we chose our machine because of its ability to create intricate details with a 20-micron build layer and a 50-micron spot size. Cost Considerations: The initial investment in metal 3D printing equipment and materials can be significant. For many companies, you may not see a clear return on investment (ROI), especially when traditional methods continue to meet their needs effectively. Contact us and see for yourself the quality and detail we can achieve and Rethink what’s possible.
