Machining is part of metal additive manufacturing, but the 3D printing/machining interconnection is particularly close when the mode of AM is directed energy deposition (DED). This process offers a fast way to obtain a near-net-shape metal part, providing for more economical production of some parts made of challenging metals and other metal parts that are very large — provided machining is available to complete the near-net-shape form. So you've made a sophisticated AM machine. How do you ensure users can, well, use it? Technology supplier EOS is addressing this with a dedicated training facility in Novi, Michigan. The Additive Minds Academy opened on August 1 and consists of dedicated classroom space as well as two labs — one for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of metals and one for polymers. AM's Stephanie Hendrixson visited the location and learned five reasons why a physical training facility makes sense. Construction 3D Printing with Robotics, Geopolymer Alquist 3D, based in Greeley, Colorado, has developed technology for 3D printing buildings, homes and infrastructure. Key to this 3D printer, though, is the material it uses. Rather than cementitious concrete, Alquist 3D’s machine prints with carbon-neutral geopolymer. Institute 1) The Manufacturing Futures Institute seeks to advance the digital transformation of manufacturing, which includes robotics, digital twins, generative design and more in addition to additive manufacturing. Institute 2) The Next Manufacturing Center is a sister institute dedicated solely to AM and its research to model spatter inside laser powder bed fusion 3D printers. Making the jump from metal injection molding to binder jetting — Paige Musical Products has journeyed through a variety of manufacturing processes to make capos, ultimately landing on metal injection molding (MIM) to produce its Paige Pro capo for guitars 🎸 (A capo is a tuning accessory for a fretted instrument.) But when Paige wanted to expand to provide capos to banjo players as well, it had a smaller market and a very nuanced instrument to accommodate.
