Gazelle is a point-of-care, in vitro diagnostic platform that uses #AI, innovative optics, and miniaturization to help diagnose diseases (including sickle cell and beta thalassemia) in underserved areas. Hemex Health, Inc. has distributed over 1.3 million tests for sickle cell disease in 38 countries and is now bringing Gazelle to the United States with the support of a National Institutes of Health grant. Sickle cell disease is most prevalent among African Americans and Hispanic Americans. Most individuals in the United States who possess the trait are not aware of it due to limited access to testing. Hemex is seeking a breakthrough device designation from the FDA to address this situation.

Great clip here that’s worth your time. Stephen MacMillan, of Hologic, Inc. and our AdvaMed board, lays out succinctly and convincingly the power of #AI already unfolding in health care settings around the world: Earlier and more accurate diagnoses than before AI was involved. And fewer false positives, which, as he points out, create not only unnecessary “angst” in patients but add costs to our system through unnecessary visits, tests, and days off work, and so on. As Peter J Arduini of GE HealthCare and I pointed out in our recent op-ed, there is a lot of understandable concern about #AI’s role in our lives overall. We should be questioning AI carefully. People’s jobs and our children’s education are potentially at risk, to name just two big reasons to be skeptical. But one area where we should not be as concerned about AI is in #medtech. It is already saving lives, and it’s just the beginning. If you missed our op-ed, take a look here: https://lnkd.in/e-wCG75U
Our CEO, Steve MacMillan, appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box to share insights on how AI is transforming early detection in mammography and reducing false positives. Great to see #medtech finding an innovative way to meet a pressing need. Noting one of the biggest blood donation shortages in a generation, Abbott created a friendly competition among the millions of fans cheering on Big Ten college football this season. Why not tap into good-natured school rivalries and a high-profile football division to perform a public service? Kudos to everyone at Abbott for taking on such a tremendously important cause in such a groundbreaking way, the first of its kind. One team will win the official award but everyone wins through what might become a lifelong generous habit for college student donors. But you don’t have to be a student or even a football fan to donate blood and save lives. You can designate your donation to count toward your favorite Big Ten school. Go to bigten.org/abbott to learn more. #WeGiveBlood
We just kicked off “The #WeGiveBlood Drive,” a conference-wide blood donation competition with Big Ten Conference. We made some new friends, and maybe even some new enemies. 👀 Head to bigten.org/abbott to see where your school stands.
