We're so excited to announce that Mr. Michael Roldan and Mr. Lester Kwok will be speaking at ITS Nook! Mr. Michael Roldan is a Supervisory Special Agent with the FBI, and he and Mr. Kwok will be presenting The Use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in Criminal Activity. We're thrilled to have them! This presentation discusses how Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly being exploited for malicious activities. Key points include: 1. Writing Malware: LLMs can generate harmful code, such as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) scripts, when manipulated. 2. Phishing and Social Engineering: LLMs help generate sophisticated and convincing phishing attempts that target specific individuals, making scams harder to detect. 3. Credential Harvesting: Cybercriminals use LLMs to create phishing emails or fake websites that trick users into giving up credentials. 4. Business Email Compromise (BEC): Scammers leverage AI to impersonate executives in emails, leading to financial theft and sensitive data breaches. 5. Synthetic Identity Fraud: AI helps criminals create synthetic identities for financial fraud, posing a growing threat to financial institutions. 6. Deepfakes: AI-generated deepfakes of trusted individuals are used in scams, like directing fraudulent financial transfers or extracting confidential information. 7. Vulnerability Identification: AI aids attackers in identifying system vulnerabilities and selecting high-value targets more efficiently. 8. Confidence/Romance Scams: AI-powered chat scripts and voice cloning make romance scams more believable, leading to substantial financial losses. 9. Crypto-Investment Scams: AI is used to enhance fraudulent crypto investment schemes, resulting in billions of dollars in losses. 10. Employment Scams: AI-generated fake interviews trick companies into hiring fraudulently, contributing to large-scale employment fraud. ITS Nook is coming up! Book while you still can! We're so excited to announce that Austin Whisnant will be speaking at ITS Nook, coming to you on November 6th this year. Ms. Austin Whisnant is a Senior Researcher with the Insider Risk team at the Software Engineering Institute, part of Carnegie Mellon University. She is a first-time speaker at one of our events, and we're so excited to have her! For a taste of her presentation: Large language models hold the promise of reducing insider risk incidents, but they come with a unique set of challenges, including lack of transparency, bias, and the difficulty of implementing them operationally. This presentation outlines the potential pitfalls of leveraging LLMs for insider risk analysis and suggests methods for mitigating those challenges. We first explain implementations of LLMs in similar applications, and how their lessons can apply to the domain of insider risk. We then outline the challenges and pitfalls of AI, and LLMs more specifically, and discuss how those challenges apply to the domain of insider risk. Lastly, we discuss when it is appropriate to use AI in the insider risk domain, where to fit in LLMs, and what to consider when implementing these methods operationally. LLMs have great potential for assisting with, and even significantly improving insider threat protection. This presentation seeks to provide guidance for their careful and thoughtful application.
