As a private practice owner, have you taken advantage of the benefits that come with using a group purchasing organization (GPO)? A survey of medical group owners conducted by MGMA revealed nearly three-quarters of respondents said they use a GPO. According to MGMA, "Supply chain disruptions have led to shortages and price hikes for medical supplies, while inflation has increased the cost of medical equipment, utilities and overhead." But, with the help of a GPO, medical groups gain more buying power that can positively impact a practice's financial health: "By aggregating the purchasing volume of multiple practices, GPOs secure better pricing and terms on medical supplies, equipment, and services than individual practices could achieve on their own." We have more pictures to share from our Day of Caring event 🫶😊 One thing about AdvancedMD: Whether we're in the office or volunteering at charitable organizations, our team gets stuff done! We had about 40 employees volunteer their time during our Day of Caring event at St. Vincent Dining Hall, the Utah Food Bank, and the Green Urban Lunchbox organization. At St. Vincent, our volunteers prepared ingredients to use in meals, chopping and peeling vegetables, labeling meal containers, and doing whatever other kitchen duties were required. The group who volunteered at the Utah Food Bank spent their time in the warehouse sorting donations, boxing food items, and putting together food kits for home deliveries. And at the Green Urban Lunchbox, our team had the opportunity to harvest food that some of our volunteers had planted in the spring! It was a productive day all around 💛🎉

For healthcare providers who participate in the MIPS program, this is your friendly reminder that it is now crunch time if you haven't started the reporting process yet. Don't worry though, there's still time. "Even if you start now, you may have the opportunity to avoid a penalty related to your 2024 MIPS score," writes Michael Brody, co-founder of the HIPAA compliance firm TLD Systems. According to Michael, providers who start reporting their measures now still have an opportunity to avoid a penalty related to their 2024 MIPS score. A new study conducted by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine—and published in JAMA Internal Medicine—found that "improper placement" of a person's arm may be leading to "massive over-diagnosis" of high blood pressure (BP) for patients across the U.S. "We demonstrate that when the arm is completely unsupported and hanging at the side, as is often the case when arm support on a desk or chair is not possible or when a patient is seated on the examination table in a clinic room, BP is greatly overestimated," according to the study. "Furthermore, positioning the arm in the lap, a typical compromise for the above scenarios, also results in considerable BP overestimation. Thus, these arm positions should not be used, even in the setting of limited time or resources." Researchers said that incorrect blood pressure readings could lead to "substantial" over-diagnosis of hypertension and unnecessary follow-ups for patients. As a private practice owner, you may not have the healthcare technology budget of a larger medical group. Fortunately, emerging technologies are helping to democratize access to highly effective software platforms for practices of all sizes, according to Trent Peterson, PhD, Head of User Experience at AdvancedMD. In his recent column exploring the promise of AI within the healthcare industry, Trent highlights how the technology is helping to improve patient engagement strategies, while also emphasizing its inherent challenges. "The ASTP/ONC is actively working to ensure that AI technology is built responsibly and transparently across the industry. They established new certification requirements and a new position for Chief AI Officer," writes Trent. "These are important steps that all healthcare technology organizations need to be mindful of to ensure that their solutions are built in compliance with the current regulatory framework." According to Trent, the ONC's recent HTI-1 Final Rule is a significant step toward establishing the responsible use of AI by all healthcare providers and organizations, offering specific provisions that, "Promote transparency and risk management of AI-based technologies used in health care delivery." Staffing challenges continue to be a major issue for medical group owners, according to a recent survey from MGMA. When asked about hiring issues, more than 50% of survey respondents said that finding qualified candidates was their top staffing challenge. "For practices struggling with finding candidates, 59% of practice leaders said this challenge worsened," writes MGMA. "Nearly six in 10 (58%) of respondents who said retention was their biggest challenge noted it had worsened this year." With nearly 30% of medical group owners reporting compensation and benefits as their primary staffing challenge, MGMA emphasized how non-monetary benefits have become increasingly more important to healthcare workers—specifically, flexible scheduling, paid time off, mental health support and professional development opportunities. Unfortunately, few groups have updated their benefit packages in the past year, according to MGMA research.
