A new study analyzing more than 2.5 million preventive care claims is putting a spotlight on healthcare disparities among minority groups. Led by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the University of Toronto, the study found that patients from minority racial backgrounds and lower-income households were "significantly more likely" to have claims denied. "The study found that Asian, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic Black patients were about twice as likely to experience claim denials compared to their non-Hispanic white counterparts," according to Medical Economics. "Additionally, lower-income patients were 43% more likely to have their claims denied than higher-income patients." The study also revealed that when claims were denied, healthcare providers tended to charge more for preventative services, resulting in higher medical bills for disadvantaged groups: "For example, patients from households earning less than $30,000 were billed a median of $412 for denied claims, while those from households earning over $100,000 faced a median charge of $365." The study findings make clear that healthcare providers need to ensure equitable access to preventative care for all patients, regardless of their race, ethnicity or income and to be aware of billing disparities that impact those most in need. In a recent op-ed for Medical Economics, Michael L. Kaufman, Ph.D., M.S.W. writes, "Doctors don’t necessarily think of themselves as leaders; they think of themselves as healers. But they are leaders, particularly those who run small to medium-sized private practices where they are in charge of practically everything." In his op-ed, Kaufman offers five essential leadership tips for physicians who are in charge of everything, including: 1. Active Listening 2. Balancing Priorities 3. Championing Your People Be sure to read his full column to find out how to be a better leader at: https://lnkd.in/d74dRt-k #PrivatePractice #HealthcareCareers #PhysicianOwnedPractice

Good news for medical group employees: According to a recent MGMA poll, 35% of medical group owners are budgeting more than usual for cost-of-living and merit-based pay increases next year. "When asked which staff roles are expected to see the largest cost-of-living or merit increases in next year’s budget, practice leaders frequently mentioned billing staff, medical assistants (MAs), front desk staff and, in larger organizations, housekeeping, food service and environmental services workers," writes MGMA managing editor Chris Harrop. The survey found that the median budget increases for medical assistants and nurse practitioners was 5.5%—for nurse and advanced practice providers, the median increase was 5%. Last week, AdvancedMD published a blog post by Dr. Michael Brody, the co-founder of TLD Systems, a HIPAA Risk Assessment provider and AdvancedMD partner. The blog post offers an overview of the recent antitrust lawsuit against Epic filed by Particle Health. According to Dr. Brody, "Epic claims that they have blocked access by Particle Health to remain compliant with the HIPAA regulations. Particle Health claims that they are compliant with HIPAA and that Epic is trying to monopolize the market and squash competition." He goes on to write that he is "rooting for Particle Health" to win their legal battle, and for legislative rules and regulations to be put in place that streamline data exchange so that medical providers are able to get the information they need, "To make the best medical decisions for their patients." As promised, AdvancedMD is sharing more photos from our wildly successful Art Stroll, a recent company event that included some of the most amazing pieces of art—all created by our highly artistic and crazy talented staff 💛🎉🖌️ Hosted in The Hive at our South Jordan, Utah headquarters, the Art Stroll had more than 30 employees participate, including remote employees whose artwork was displayed digitally. There was a gorgeous charcuterie board that was almost too beautiful to eat, Martinelli's sparkling cider served in champagne flutes, and even live piano music played by one of our software engineers. In the words of one staff member, "It was a an amazing party! We have so much talent."
