It’s #FunFactFriday, and today we’re sharing five surprising soil facts. Swipe to learn more about why soil is not the same as dirt. 👀 And if you’re in California this fall, consider joining us out in the field and collecting soil samples as part of our California Biodiversity project! Soil samples will be analyzed to document organisms living in California and contribute to statewide conservation efforts. 🌱 Check the project page to learn more and apply to join!  https://lnkd.in/gpm5SdTz 📚Sources  https://lnkd.in/gfVVP-sC  https://lnkd.in/gW822cW4  https://lnkd.in/gBwcZ3EB #cabiodiversity #biodiversity #conservation #communityscience #biodiversityhotspot #citizenscience #30X30

California is the most biodiverse state in the country. Yet, its biodiversity is increasingly threatened by wildfires, climate change, and other factors. You can help protect the thousands of species that call California home by participating in our California Biodiversity project. Through the project, you’ll head out into beautiful California landscapes and collect insect and soil samples. This data will help inform conservation efforts across the state. Read more about how to get involved on the project page!  https://lnkd.in/gpm5SdTz

Ever seen these cute little critters on a hike? This is a pika, the smallest member of the rabbit family, and an indicator species for climate change. The pika lives in high elevation and cold mountainous environments. They cannot survive in temperatures warmer than 80 degrees Fahrenheit (25.5 degrees Celsius). As temperatures rise due to climate change, pikas are one of the species that can be most affected. By studying the habits and movements of these animals, we can better track the effects of climate change and protect vulnerable species like the pika. Adventure Scientists volunteers contributed to a multi-year research effort to track pikas, uncovering important lessons for the conservation of these and other animals along the way.
