Preservation in the Wake of Natural Disasters How do you preserve communities that have been devastated and damaged due to hurricanes, wildfires, and other natural disasters? What does heritage mean when the physical footprint is altered? Focusing on the work of preservation in Asheville and Los Angeles (Altadena), this conversation will explore broad themes around community resilience, rebuilding, and the ever-shifting question about what preservation looks like when the built environment is no longer there. Speakers from both communities will examine how recent events have impacted the way they see preservation practice, and what other communities should consider as they prepare for future natural disasters. The Campaign for Historic Trades is accepting applications for the Harrison Goodall Preservation Fellowship. Inspired by a gift from Harrison Goodall, this program aims to develop students and enterprising professionals into the preservation leaders of tomorrow. The fellowship awards $10,000 to support an innovative project in the historic preservation field. Fellows undertake capstone projects that, through mentorship and coaching, will make a meaningful contribution to the broader historic preservation field and support the stewardship of historic resources nationwide. This opportunity is aimed at preservation professionals, tradespeople, and students enrolled at least part-time in a preservation-related degree program. The National Park Service has signed a new 10-year lease and right of way with Williams Transco for the continued use of historic hangars in the Floyd Bennett Field unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. This agreement ensures these historically significant structures will be used for energy infrastructure, providing a vital resource to New York City and demonstrating a responsible use of federal lands. The Campaign for Historic Trades is hosting the American Historic Trades Summit April 7-9 in Chicago and registration has begun. Early bird registration ends tomorrow, March 14.
