We’re #AeconProud to share that multiple crews from our Aecon Utilities businesses have been on the ground in South Carolina and Florida providing critical support to communities affected by the recent devastating hurricanes. In preparation for Hurricane Helene, Xtreme Powerline workers and more than 100 vehicles mobilized south from Michigan to ensure they were ready to carry out storm response and help restore power to the affected areas. For three weeks, the crews have worked long hours seven days a week to support communities in Florida and South Carolina. With the arrival of Hurricane Milton, reinforcement crews from Xtreme’s Michigan base prepared to head south and were joined by western Canadian crews from Aecon Utilities’ JACO and Pacific Electrical Installations (PEI) businesses. Together, the group travelled to Florida to join Xtreme crews already on the ground there, assisting the hardest-hit communities. A huge thank you to our over 170 Xtreme Powerline, JACO, and Pacific Electrical Installations team members who left families and homes behind for this extended period to be involved in the massive, coordinated response effort.

According to the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), there are between 400,000 and 500,000 underground utility strikes reported in the United States each year, which is roughly every 62 seconds The National 8-11 Day observance is an important reminder for everyone involved in excavation work to follow safe digging practices. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the potential dangers of digging without proper precautions and to promote the use of safe excavation techniques. By participating in the National 811 Day, we can all contribute to preventing accidents and protecting the integrity of underground utility lines, such as gas pipelines, electrical cables, and telecommunications systems. It is crucial for everyone involved in excavation work to be aware of the risks and to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of themselves and others.
