Besides, Genghis Khan, to date the second most infamous person we've added to our library is Christopher Columbus. Yes, infamous is the correct word here. You may or may not not have known of his crimes against the indigenous population of Taíno Indians on the Island of Hispaniola (Now Haiti and the Dominican Republic), but his crimes against his own countrymen were so many that he was arrested and brought back to Spain in chains. He often flogged Spanish colonists and executed them without trial. A book called "A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies" was published in 1552 by Bartolomé de las Casas, a Spanish priest, in an appeal to Prince Philip II of Spain. The book contains first hand accounts as well as drawings of the atrocities committed against the natives of Hispaniola. We usually jump at the chance to include historical artwork in our app, but I couldn't include a single one of these drawing in our app in good conscience, not even for "educational" purposes. They're that bad. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, alarmed by these accounts and eager to maintain control over their New World territories, dispatched Francisco de Bobadilla, a royal official, to investigate. Upon arriving, Bobadilla witnessed enough evidence to imprison Columbus, strip him of his titles, and transport him back to Spain. Though later pardoned, Columbus lost his governorship, and his remaining voyages were conducted without his previous authority. Columbus is a Very Rare ghost in our app, and he has eleven apparitions to catch. Eight of his apparitions are direct quotes from his own diary and letters to dignitaries. Two quotes are from Bartolomé de las Casas' account of his governorship of Hispaniola, and one from a modern day Native American novelist. It's no hit job. It's just history. You can find Columbus in our Conquerors collection on Catch the Ghost alongside Genghis Khan and others. #ColumbusDay #IndigenousPeoplesDay 📲Download Catch the Ghost FREE on iOS: https://apple.co/3WOw79M
