My Vice President of Clinical Services at Aegis Living, Julie Ambachew, RN, reminded me of a significant time in our history. Here is the email she wrote me: "It has been five years since we were thrown into the unknown of COVID. At Aegis, our first known case was February 28th. Sooner than most in the country even knew what was happening, and unknown to us truly until March 7th at 6 am, when we got the call that a staff member was on a ventilator. I want to take a heartfelt moment to recognize Derrick Skinner. Whenever I called Derrick for anything we needed at Marymoor, he dropped what he was doing to get it for me. Whether it was more bins or the 30th thermometer, I needed them because they were not made to handle the frequency and use. When other people were working from home, Derrick didn’t shy away and always came to support us. I always had comfort knowing I would have support if I made the call. I also have to recognize Roger Young. Roger was still transitioning from Lodge to Marymoor and was on vacation but found himself returning to a very vulnerable and quite challenging time. He jumped right in and trusted me, and we handled every scared family member, staff member, and, quite frankly, the state as well. We held hands for those who could not be with their families and reassured them everything was going to be okay. I can’t believe it has been five years. I am so grateful Dwayne had the insight to start collecting PPE right away so we never felt like we were without. I am grateful to have Derrick and Roger, who showed authentic courageous leadership during such an uncertain time. I continue to hear stories of how many residents were lost at other senior living organizations and I am proud of what we did, how many lives we saved and how we never gave up even for a second!!" As the Founder of this great organization, getting this email from Julie this morning took my breath away, My team is the best in the business and they are stellar humans to boot! #aegisliving #peoplefirst #leadership
