Kids teaching kids to lead the way in protecting the world's oceans

About us

Aeon for Ocean (www.aeonforocean.org), a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit kids-based organization in Minnesota, founded in 2017 by now eight-year-old Aeon Bashir. It is focused on ocean conservation and environmental stewardship. Through free presentations, sing-a-longs and discussions, Aeon and the other Ambassadors share their enthusiasm for the ocean, marine life and its conservation with Minnesota school classrooms. During spring to fall, free lake beach clean-up events are held in and around Twin Cities, to help people inland understand how their actions can make a difference in protecting the world oceans and marine life. Through our ‘Krill2Whale’ program and other initiatives, ‘Aeon for Ocean’ is teaching kids they can save the World Oceans for eons! Our mission is to educate and increase awareness about ocean conservation and marine life amongst kids and their greater role in spreading the message to drive action. “Aeon for Ocean” has created ‘Krill2Whale’, a shared learning program focused on educating kids about marine life and oceans to achieve the following objectives: • Learn about marine eco-system, its importance and one’s role in protecting it • Participate and promote activities to protect our oceans from inland • Increase awareness about oceans by sharing knowledge in schools and communities

🌊🔧Dive into creativity with your very own ROV grabbing arm! 🚀✨ Want to see if you can collect items off the seafloor? Now's your chance! Get inspired, get inventive, and let your imagination run wild—there are no rules! The goal is to design, create, and experiment. 👉Shout out to Live It Earth Productions for creating a great DIY STEM Challenge! See their instructions below: Materials: Anything that you have on hand or a few of these suggestions: ● Recycling materials - cardboard, plastic containers, anything reusable ● Paper ● Ruler ● T ape ● Scissors ● String ● Glue ● Pipe Cleaners ● Elastics Phase 1: Design Your ROV Arm Start by creating a blueprint for your ROV and its arm. Ensure both parts can work together. Consider what type of arm to build and its ability to pick up objects. Sketch your ideas, allowing for changes along the way. Determine the size and materials needed, and plan a 15” by 15” seafloor map using classroom objects to create a challenging terrain. Phase 2: Build Your ROV Arm Using your chosen materials and design, start constructing your ROV arm. Test its functionality and strength during the build process. Stick to the original materials, make adjustments to your design as needed, and document any changes. **Protect Our Deep Seas!** 🌊 Deep-sea ecosystems are facing serious threats from climate change, deep-sea mining, and pollution. Hypoxia, which occurs when warming oceans reduce oxygen levels, increases the acidity in the ocean that impairs the formation of calcium carbonate shells in species such as oysters and plankton. This change endangers previously stable ecosystems. The mesopelagic zone, spanning depths of 650 to 3,200 feet, is home to around 10 billion metric tons of marine life, making it an attractive target for commercial fishing. However, the ecological impacts of fishing in this area are not clear, and such activities could harm species like lanternfish and krill, which are vital for the transport of carbon and serve as food for larger marine animals. Microplastics have been found at depths of up to 3,200 feet, and studies suggest they can infiltrate food webs, posing potential risks. These particles also attract pollutants, meaning animals that ingest microplastics may consume harmful toxins as well. Each of us can contribute to the protection of deep ocean life through our actions and by supporting policies and organizations dedicated to conservation. Some simple actions include reducing our carbon footprints, advocating for clean energy, minimizing single-use plastics, and encouraging our representatives to tackle plastic waste. These ecosystems are not just barren landscapes; they're vital to our planet's health, supporting diverse marine life and influencing global climate patterns. It's time to take action and safeguard these underwater treasures! 🔍**Learn how you can help protect the deep sea from human impacts!** - #saveourseas #deepseaconservation #protectmarinelife #aeonforocean #oceanconservation

Happy Monday!🫶🏻 Ever wonder why some deep-sea creatures grow to enormous sizes compared to their shallow-water relatives? This phenomenon, known as deep-sea gigantism, occurs in a range of species like squids, isopods, and jellyfish. While the exact reasons are still a mystery, scientists have some fascinating theories: 🌡Colder Temperatures– Deep waters are frigid, and lower temperatures may slow metabolism, allowing for longer lifespans and more growth. 🌱Scarcity of Food– Larger body size may allow animals to store more energy for survival when food is scarce. 🌊Higher Pressure– The crushing pressure of deep-sea environments could influence body structure, possibly leading to larger sizes for some species. 🐙Look at the image to see the size comparison between a giant deep-sea squid (12 meters long) and its smaller, shallow-water cousin (1 meter). ❓Why do you think creatures grow larger in the deep sea? Share your theories in the comments below! — #aeonforocean #deepseagigantism #oceanmysteries #marinebiology #natureisamazing #happymonday #linkedin #socialmedia #followformore

The weekend begins…NOW! Which means that we have came to the final of “Abyss’ Deep Plunge”! Thank you for following along this week and we hope you enjoy the ending.☺️✨ Part 3: The Final Challenge 🩵 Just as Abyss gets comfortable exploring the deep, they face an unexpected challenge: a race against time. The Deep Seeker's power is running low, and Abyss has limited time to make a monumental discovery—or get stuck in the deep sea forever (cue dramatic music). Abyss spots a vent in the distance, one of those legendary hydrothermal vents where life flourishes in total darkness. The sub’s sensors start lighting up—this is a major find! But just as Abyss zooms in, a swarm of jellyfish blocks the way. “No, no, NO! Not again!” Abyss cries. It’s now or never. They’ve got to steer past their worst fear to reach the discovery of a lifetime. With a deep breath, Abyss grips the controls, squints, and maneuvers through the jellyfish like a pro. They make it! The hydrothermal vent is teeming with strange life forms, a new world hidden deep beneath the ocean. Mission accomplished! As Abyss rises back to the surface, they reflect on the future of the deep sea, how it holds so many mysteries, but also faces threats. One thing’s for sure: Abyss will return (once they’ve gotten over the whole jellyfish thing). — #AeonforOcean #story #deepsea #adventure #science #newpost #humpday #nonprofit #nonprofitorganization #awareness #oceanconservation #marineconservation #minneapolis #advocate #conservation #nonprofitlife #oceanlife #oceanvibes

We are one day closer to the weekend, ocean friends!🥳 Please enjoy part 2 of “Abyss’ Wild Plunge”, which is our story of the month! 🩵 Part 2: Creatures of the Dark ✨ The adventure gets weirder as Abyss drifts into the deep sea’s eerie twilight. Out of nowhere, a glowing anglerfish appears, its creepy lure bobbing in front of the sub's window. “Well, that’s... unsettling,” Abyss mutters, steering away. But the anglerfish isn’t the only bizarre creature down here. Abyss spots giant squid, their long tentacles curling through the water like something out of a horror movie, and bioluminescent jellyfish (yikes!) lighting up the water with neon pulses. Suddenly, Abyss sees something huge—like, really huge—a giant isopod, looking like an armored bug the size of a golden retriever. "What is with everything being giant down here?!" Abyss exclaims. It’s the phenomenon of deep-sea gigantism, where creatures grow way larger than theirshallow-water relatives. And while Abyss tries to dodge another jellyfish, they can't help but wonder why these creatures are so... well, huge. — #AeonforOcean #story #deepsea #adventure #science #newpost #humpday #nonprofit #nonprofitorganization #awareness #oceanconservation #marineconservation #minneapolis #advocate #conservation #nonprofitlife #oceanlife #oceanvibes

Happy 🐫 day to everyone! Today, we are introducing you to our story of the month, “Abyss’ Wild Plunge! 🌊 Here is part 1: Into the Deep Blue.. ✨ Meet Abyss: Not your ordinary scientist—Abyss is an adventurer with a big dream and an even bigger fear... of jellyfish! Despite this odd phobia, Abyss has one goal: explore the deepest, most mysterious part of the ocean. Today’s the day! Armed with their trusty submersible, “The Deep Seeker”, Abyss is ready for the biggest plunge of their life. As they dive deeper and deeper, sunlight fades, and pressure builds, but Abyss is too pumped to notice—until, of course, a jellyfish appears right outside the window. “Ahhh! Why did it have to be jellyfish?!” Abyss yells, clinging to the controls. The jelly pulses past, and with a sigh of relief, they continue into the dark unknown. The Deep Sea: It’s a place where sunlight dares not venture, starting at 1,000 meters below the surface. As Abyss leaves the jellyfish behind, they realize they’re now in a world few have ever seen—where strange, glowing creatures rule and survival takes on a whole new meaning. Don’t forget to follow for more! We can’t wait to share part 2 with you!☺️ — #story #deepsea #adventure #science #newpost #humpday #AeonforOcean #nonprofit #nonprofitorganization #awareness #oceanconservation #marineconservation #minneapolis #advocate #conservation #nonprofitlife #oceanlife #oceanvibes
