On this episode of the podcast “No One Is Coming to Save Us,” Executive Director of AERDF’s Reading Reimagined, Rebecca Kockler, speaks alongside Jamila Newman of TNTP on how we might close the nation’s literacy gap and address the urgent illiteracy crisis among PreK-8 students. As Rebecca says, 70% of kids in the U.S. cannot read on grade level. We can and must do better as a country at serving our kids in meaningful ways in reading. We advance scientific discovery & inventions that further students' brilliance and transform PreK-12 education futures.
About us
Advanced Education Research & Development Fund or AERDF (sounds like air-diff) is the first national nonprofit dedicated to advancing research and development in PreK-12 education. Inspired by the U.S. federal government’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in the defense, health, and energy sectors, AERDF pursues multigenerational change through scientific discoveries and inventions that unlock new capabilities for addressing the most persistent challenges in teaching, learning, and assessment. Think of the mRNA technology to reach a Covid vaccine. Or the R&D that led to the creation of GPS or the internet. We need capacities within our U.S. education systems to reach that level of impact. How can we apply executive function skill development to further math success, or help assessment move at the speed of teaching, or end illiteracy? These are the missions of AERDF's current three programs – EF+Math, Assessment for Good, and Reading Reimagined. AERDF’s R&D programs produce generalizable knowledge that can be applied across the sector, technical capabilities that can be embedded in products and practices, and prototypes that offer adaptable solutions to foster student growth – all helping to catalyze broad improvements in education. By prioritizing Black and Latino learners and students experiencing poverty, AERDF ensures that innovations are inclusive and equitable. What if education research started by asking: What works, for whom, and under what conditions? In our latest episode, Alex Sarlin chats with Auditi Chakravarty, CEO of the Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF). Auditi shares how AERDF brings inclusive, evidence-based research to life by centering Black, Latino, and low-income learners in every step of the process. We cover: 🚀 How AERDF’s programs—EF+Math, Reading Reimagined, and Assessment for Good—are driving real impact 📚 Why co-designing with educators and students builds better tools that get used and deliver results 🛠️ The importance of breaking down silos between research, practice, and product development 🤝 How to create funding ecosystems that foster innovation and risk-taking 🤖 Why AI can accelerate equity in education when aligned with evidence 🎙️ Listen to the episode here and as always let us know what you think: https://lnkd.in/gnNVy9Mj Stay updated with the latest EdTech news and innovations! We are excited to highlight a set of storybooks for upper elementary students produced by Our Mathematical World, a research and development (R&D) team proudly supported by EF+Math, Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF)’s inaugural program. Designed to support mathematical problem-solving skills, executive functions, math vocabulary, and math identity, the storybooks launch this week! The storybooks feature characters and storylines that were co-designed with students to reflect their diverse experiences and emphasize math problems in their communities. That way, readers can see themselves as proficient mathematicians, just like the characters in the stories! The books are available in English and Spanish. This book series comes from years of collaboration, iteration, and development, led by Caroline Hornburg and David Purpura and are backed by research. AERDF enables and accelerates R&D initiatives where learners, educators, researchers, and developers collaborate on promising teaching and learning breakthroughs in PreK-12 education. The Our Mathematical World storybooks are one innovation resulting from this team’s approach to Inclusive R&D. Order yours at https://lnkd.in/emwZvt2x and meet friends Pilar, Uriah, Lamar, Simone, and Eduardo as they work together to solve math problems in their community! According to the NAEP data, 64% of 12th-grade students graduate without achieving proficiency in reading (NCES, 2019). Is it too late to intervene and support these older struggling readers? We don't think so. ANet is embarking on an exciting partnership with Reading Reimagined, supported by the Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) and Stanford University, to identify and teach these students the foundational skills needed to up-level their reading. Reading Reimagined is one of three Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) research and development programs. The team is focused on ending illiteracy and increasing reading fluency and comprehension for all students. Their research is shedding light on a hidden hurdle preventing many students from becoming great readers, the decoding threshold. Only recently have these decoding challenges been recognized as an enormous unmet learning need that blocks large numbers of older readers from comprehending grade-level text, which is essential for learning. Reading Reimagined partners with researchers and educators to develop both assessment and instructional solutions that will allow teachers to support their older students to cross the decoding threshold so they can focus on comprehending what they read. Every student is a powerful learner capable of success in math. And, every student brings core innate assets into the classroom: cultural wealth, lived experience, and executive function skills. EF+Math, Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF)’s inaugural R&D program, shares what its teams have learned in their over several years of research and development to improve math learning outcomes for Black and Latino students and all students experiencing poverty. “By developing executive function skills in a math context, students are building their overall cognitive capacity for math learning and problem-solving. This new understanding helps us progress as a society towards the day when all students are mathematically equipped to solve the world’s most challenging problems,” explains Matthew Feldmann, Vice President of Product at MIND Education and member of EF+Math’s MathicSTEAM R&D Project Team. Teams are working to co-create math learning experiences that allow students to bring their assets into the math classroom, so their brilliance is celebrated throughout their learning process. “Executive function is… being cognizant about how you’re thinking about problems… We want all of our students to be good problem solvers… That means to go against one of the narratives in math education, which is to go fast. The CueThinkEF+ platform, instead, says ‘you're presented with this word problem, let’s break this into four steps–let’s explore, plan, and then solve,’” explains Dr. Aris Winger, associate professor of mathematics Georgia Gwinnett College and member of EF+Math’s CueThinkEF+ and Pennesota R&D Project Team. At the heart of Advanced Inclusive R&D is creating and implementing an inclusive, equity-centered approach that blends the expertise and talents of students, educators, researchers, and developers to tackle education’s most pressing challenges. “The curriculum and program we have now has undergone changes from the very beginning. We go through iterative cycles of design and implementation, find impact, and engage teachers and students to refine the program. And we now have a program that is 16 activities long,” highlights Lourdes M. Acevedo-Farag, Ph.D student at the School of Education of UC Irvine and member of EF+Math’s Fraction Ball R&D Project Team. Watch the video https://lnkd.in/eJRnxytX to hear directly from the teams, and catch EF+Math in Chicago this week at #NCTM24 to hear about the promising progress they’re making in math education!
