Donors entrust us with a lot when they give. In return, we must respect their rights to privacy, through data protection and list management. It's important to ensure we secure confidential information about our donors and convey to them their rights to request omission of personal information for future use or transfer. Standards 19-22 indicate how to handle donor information ethically. Learn more about donor privacy by reviewing and signing AFP's new code of ethics and code of conduct, effective January 2025. As stewards of philanthropic funds, it's important to handle donors' wishes with care. Standards 12-18 of the code of ethics focuses on the solicitation and stewardship of philanthropic funds. It is a fundraiser's responsibility to "ensure contributions are used in accordance with donor intent and restrictions." But what if a donor's wishes conflict with your organization's mission? Members must "affirm their primary responsibilities are to their organizations while also safeguarding the interests of donors." This may mean declining a donation that could put these at odds and communicating with full transparency what that means to the donor. Learn more by reviewing and signing AFP's new code of ethics and code of conduct, effective January 2025. Standards 9-11 in AFP's code of ethics outline conflicts of interest. As ethical fundraisers, we should "avoid activities that conflict with or may conflict with their fiduciary, ethical and legal obligations to their organizations, clients or professions." When conflicts of interest arise, we should disclose them immediately. Doing so is not an implication of ethical impropriety but is important to maintaining transparency and public trust. Learn more about conflicts of interest by reviewing and signing AFP's new code of ethics and code of conduct, effective January 2025. This month for Ethics Awareness Month, we'll be looking at various standards set by AFP Global in maintaining ethical behavior in the fundraising environment. One of those tenets is public trust, which we build through integrity, honesty, and respect. Of the eight standards in this category, the first is that members should "not engage in activities that harm the members’ organizations, clients, or profession or knowingly brings the profession into disrepute." We must acknowledge that just as every staff and volunteer person represents our individual organizations, every fundraiser represents the profession. We build public trust in the profession of fundraising by practicing integrity in all we do. Learn more about public trust and transparency by reviewing and signing AFP's new code of ethics and code of conduct, effective January 2025.
