he U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) announced a new supercomputer and rapid response laboratory (RRL) intended to bolster its Chemical and Biological Defense Program's Generative Unconstrained Intelligent Drug Engineering (GUIDE) program. While there have been highly publicized layoffs in the tech sector in 2023 and 2024, the demand for STEM and R&D talent in the U.S. remains strong overall. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects continued growth over the next few years, with STEM jobs expected to increase by nearly 11% by 2032. During a Black Hat USA 2024 session, Aqua Security researchers detailed six critical vulnerabilities in AWS services, which have since been patched, and a new "shadow resource" attack vector. An AWS S3 bucket (shadow resource) is created automatically when customers create a CloudFormation service with the AWS Management Console for the first time in a new region. In Tiobe’s index of programming language popularity for August 2024, Python scored its highest-ever rating (18.04%) and became the first language to reach 18% since Java did so in November 2016. Python has an eight-point lead over second-place C++, which has a rating of 10.04%. Yuval Boger of quantum hardware manufacturer QuEra Computing says demand is on the rise at datacenters and high-performance computing (HPC) facilities for the integration of quantum processors, which poses several engineering challenges. In a survey of 663 Java professionals by Java platform Azul Systems, 86% of respondents reported migrating away from Oracle Java. More than 50% of respondents cited costs, 47% said they preferred open source distribution, and 40% expressed concerns with ongoing changes in Oracle's pricing, licensing, and support. A survey by digital workspace firm Citrix revealed 94% of large U.S. companies have repatriated data or workloads from the cloud during the last three years, due to factors ranging from security and costs to issues with performance, compatibility, and downtime.
