When it comes to ammonia application, placement is key for success. Here's what to watch for: ✔️ Ideal moisture and depth: Inject ammonia deep enough, and NH3 will spread about 4 inches, staying in place for optimal plant uptake. ⚠️ Too shallow: NH3 can escape at the surface, reducing effectiveness. ⚠️ Too wet: If the slit doesn’t seal, ammonia struggles to penetrate. ⚠️ Too dry or sandy: Ammonia moves too far and doesn't stay where it's needed. ⚠️ Rate too high for the soil: Some NH3 may still reach the surface. Can Anhydrous Ammonia Be Applied to Dry Soils? Yes, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Dry soil can hold ammonia because it still contains some moisture, and ammonia attaches to the soil's clay and organic matter. However, if the soil is cloddy or doesn’t seal properly, ammonia can escape during or after application. To prevent this, ensure the ammonia is injected deep enough, and that the soil covers the injection track well. Using wing sealers or closing disks can help reduce loss by sealing the track. Also, reducing application rates or using narrower knife spacing can minimize ammonia loss. Dry soils in good condition can actually hold more ammonia than moist soils. Proper application is key!
