Safety is a core value at CHS. Our environment, health and safety (EHS) team plays a crucial part in keeping safety the top priority in the work we do. Tom Brower leads our EHS team. "We're accountable for helping employees understand and operate with safety in mind, “ he says. "The key is to create a culture that identifies the risks involved with the work being performed, whether that involves grain handling, driving, oil production or other functions, and work to ensure employees have controls in place to protect themselves and others against safety risks." When devastating floods and cyclones hit 50 cities in the Rio Grande do Sul area in Brazil this spring, CHS employees jumped into action. Our team in Brazil donated, sorted, packed and labeled more than 2,300 basic hygiene items and bottles of water to help impacted individuals and families immediately following the storms – and their work continues. Disruptions remain widespread, rains have continued to plague some areas where the water has not yet fully receded, and upcoming cooler temperatures are a concern. The team says they plan to continue donating items until the situation improves. “This tragedy is mobilizing the population in Brazil to send every type of donations to the victims and to help rebuild the state,” says Claudia Ferro, human resources director with CHS in South America. “Our spirit of cooperation is key.”

Our interns had a chance to ask a group of CHS leaders some questions at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., in a recent panel event. Mary Kaul-Hottinger, Gary Halvorson, Rick Dusek, and Brandon Smith met with summer interns, both in-person and virtually. The discussion covered a variety of topics including: setting career goals, receiving feedback, culture and employee retention and more. "Always be willing to change. Look at the possibilities. Have agility and adaptability. That's the future; things change fast." - Kaul-Hottinger "At a company like ours, you can start in one place and follow a passion to other places that might feed a curiosity or help with your professional development... Challenge yourself and chase your passions. It's all fuel for a career." - Halvorson "Try different experiences to help you figure out what you like and if the company is where you'd want to grow your career. Always be learning and meeting people." - Dusek "There's always cycles in business, good and bad. Be known as a person that leans in, asking ‘How can I help?' People will remember those tough times and how you showed up as a leader to help." - Smith #CHSIncIntern

It's our annual CHS Spirit of Service Days. For two weeks, employees from across CHS are finding ways to give back in the communities where we live and work. Together, we are providing support for more than 35 volunteer projects that impact youth, the environment and access to basic needs. Thank you to our employees who are putting our value of cooperative spirit into action. #CHSInc

After exploring an employee resource group (ERG) fair at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., two years ago, Amanda Midtling decided to join the Harvest Pride ERG. "I love that everyone is welcome and encouraged to be themselves," says Midtling. "I feel like a more rounded person being involved in Harvest Pride. In addition to doing my job, I can be my authentic self and support something that I believe in." "The National Coming Out day programs have been very powerful the last couple of years," she adds. "They've helped me feel more closely connected to the community and leave with a better understanding of the challenges, biases and emotions that can be involved with coming out and how everyone has a different path to being their authentic self." Though a leader for Harvest Pride, Midtling makes an effort to attend as many events as she can from all of the ERGs at CHS. "Participation and support are important parts of being inclusive," she says.

We've opened a new crop science research center to help speed development of agronomic solutions and products for our farmer-owners and customers. “Before the R&D center, we relied solely on field research, which can be limited by the growing season and impacted by the environment,” says Alissa Geske, research lead at the facility. “Now we have the power to evaluate new and experimental products across a wide range of crops and environments all year." "It will allow us to effectively narrow down a large pool of products to a handful to send to the field for ground truthing,” she says. “Ultimately, we will be able to get products to customers in less time.” Learn more about this center and what its research will focus on: https://bit.ly/3z7YyG4.

The CHS Harvest for Hunger campaign has brought communities together to fight hunger since 2011. CHS farmer-owners, employees and communities can participate in fundraising activities, donation drives and meal-packing events at CHS facilities across the U.S. “One of the core values of CHS is cooperative spirit,” says Tom Lehar, who was a co-chair for this year's campaign. “Harvest for Hunger fits right into the CHS culture and commitment to our rural communities.” This year, the campaign raised over $493,000 and 41,000 pounds of food which will benefit food shelves, pantries and nonprofit organizations. #CHSInc
