Combining farming and solar photovoltaic electricity production – known as agrivoltaics - on a mere 1% of EU utilised agricultural area (UAA) could help to surpass the EU’s 2030 targets - 720 GW direct current - for solar energy generation. This innovative multi land-use application shows great potential: unlike conventional ground mounted photovoltaic systems, in agrivoltaic applications the panels are installed in such a way that agricultural activities, such as growing crops, grass or fruit, remain the primary use of the land area, while also giving access for farm machinery or livestock. The panels can provide shadowing to mitigate heat stress on crops and offer protection from severe weather. Likewise, greenhouses can be made of semi-transparent PV panels. #Agrivoltaics can help alleviate concerns about land competition between solar panels and farming activities, while supporting policies related to energy transition, agriculture, the environment and biodiversity in the EU's pursuit of the #European #GreenDeal targets for a climate neutral Europe. The day Roy Itzhaki from Tulip winery LTD sent us an invite titled: “The Most Technological #Agrivoltaics Vineyard in the World,” will forever stand out for me. Roy organized a small gathering of technological partners who were chosen to join his visionary project, along with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture leading the Agrivoltaics regulation. Developing the world’s most advanced Agrivoltaics vineyard isn’t about megalomania — it’s about addressing the real challenges of modern agriculture. Here’s why this matters: 1) The Aging Farming Workforce The average age of farmers globally is 60! Recruiting skilled workers for the field is becoming increasingly difficult. As Tulip's head of operations shared, labor costs have doubled in recent years, yet the workforce is less experienced and less efficient. 2) Climate Change and Its Impact Climate change is not a hypothetical scenario—it’s a present and growing reality in agriculture. Its effects are evident in the vineyards: - Lower acidity in grapes - Reduced berry weight - Higher potential alcohol levels (While higher alcohol might seem appealing for a stronger buzz, it doesn’t equate to better wine quality.) These trends present immense challenges for those who wish to continue cultivating wine grapes. Roy is taking this challenge head-on—not just for himself, but for growers and wineries worldwide. His vision is bold, and it’s exactly the kind of innovation agriculture needs right now.
