Nestled among scenic trails with stunning views of Mount Rainier, the 400,000 SF Wesley at Tehaleh campus redefines senior living. This thoughtfully designed community offers 136 independent living units, 42 catered living units, 18 memory care units, and a 24,000 SF town center surrounded by lush landscapes, ponds, and an on-site creek. AHBL provided civil and structural engineering, land use planning, and surveying for this project. Our structural team developed cost-effective framing solutions that enhance architectural details in public spaces, while the land use and survey teams ensured seamless integration with Pierce County's design standards. We're thrilled to see the old Lowell Elementary School being used by our community’s first responders ahead of its planned demolition in February. AHBL is proud to provide civil and structural engineering, as well as planning services, for the school's replacement project. Construction begins next year! #AHBL #AHBLLife #TacomaPublicSchools #CivilEngineering #StructuralEngineering #Planning
Tacoma firefighters train at old Lowell school With only a few months until Lowell Elementary’s demolition in February, the Tacoma Fire Department (TFD) is making use of the building for training exercises. This provides an excellent opportunity for firefighters to conduct building searches and run mock drills in a realistic environment. In addition to TFD, Northwest Disaster Search Dogs will also utilize the space for training, allowing the dogs to sharpen their skills in real-world conditions, making them more effective in the field. This partnership continues the district’s collaboration with local first responders, similar to what was done during the construction project at Fawcett Elementary. Lowell is one of 8 school replacements or historic renovations funded by the $535 million school construction bond voters passed in 2020. Lowell staff and students will continue to use the Westend swing site for the next two school years, during construction of their new school. The existing Lowell building will be demolished in February, with construction of the new school slated from 2025 to 2026. Last week, we celebrated the grand opening of Pierce College Puyallup’s Johnson Science Building. We’re proud to have teamed with INTEGRUS architecture and Absher Construction Company to provide civil engineering services for this state-of-the-art STEM facility, which features eight teaching labs, nine classrooms, 30 faculty offices, and a fabrication lab dedicated to biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics programs. Additionally, we designed a 100-stall parking addition with ADA-compliant spaces to support the new building. Here’s to advancing education and innovation! #AHBL #AHBLLife #STEM #PierceCollege

We’re excited to showcase our work on Key Peninsula and Kopachuck Middle Schools, in partnership with TCF Architecture, PLLC! Both modernization projects improved learning environments while students remained on-site. At Key Peninsula Middle School, the building was expanded by 11,800 SF, enhancing the administration area, gym, and classrooms, while upgrading utilities and landscaping. For Kopachuck Middle School, the team focused on improving accessibility, pedestrian routes, and stormwater systems. #AHBL #AHBLLife #SchoolModernization #CivilEngineering #LandscapeArchitecture #AHBL
TCF’s design team worked on Key Peninsula Middle School and Kopachuck Middle School simultaneously for Peninsula School District. A strategy to develop a consistent design theme that would translate well at both schools was requested, with the only obvious variation being the color palette to reflect each school’s colors. Home to the Cougars in Lakebay, WA, Key Peninsula is a building modernization with an administration wing addition and gym expansion. Originally built in the early 1980s, the project goal was to improve functionality and flow of interior spaces, provide fresh new signage to enhance wayfinding, and maximize natural light to better the overall learning environment. The building’s entrance was redesigned with an additional vestibule for accessibility along with concrete ramps, steps, and a freshly landscaped plaza.
