🇸🇸 With just two years until #SouthSudan’s 2026 elections, following their postponement from 2024, is there enough time to establish the necessary mechanisms and structures? 📕 Check out Nic Cheeseman’s latest paper for Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Africa on how to ensure peaceful elections in South Sudan ⬇️
🚨 New Discussion Paper: How to Hold Peaceful Elections in South Sudan 🚨 I am delighted to share a new publication 📝 , How to Hold Peaceful Elections in South Sudan, with my brilliant colleagues Luka Biong, and Edmund Yakani. Read the full paper below and here: https://lnkd.in/gsuYiGvM The general elections ✅ in South Sudan 🇸🇸 have been postponed to December 2026, leaving limited time to implement mechanisms needed to minimize violence 🕊️ and resolve conflicts. Building on the 2023 publication "How (Not) to Hold Elections in South Sudan", this analysis provides pragmatic strategies for fostering peaceful elections. Inspired by consultations with civil society, political leaders, and academics, the discussion paper acknowledges the risks while presenting realistic, actionable options for addressing the country’s challenges and opportunities. This publication is designed to help South Sudanese 🇸🇸policy makers and citizens to think through the different strategies that can be employed now to minimise electoral violence 🕊️ , which are most likely to be effective in the South Sudanese 🇸🇸 context, and which can realistically be implemented ahead of the next general elections. ✅ The report is published under the ‘Raising Civil VOICES’ project by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Africa in partnership with #CIGPJ and #CEPO, funded by the #EuropeanUnion. Thanks especially to Ulrich Thum, and before him Anna Reuss, for their hard work in making this happen. Thanks also to Darren Scott Nance and Jan Pospisil for their insights and inspiration.
