20% of the world’s population yet only 2% of global air traffic from Africa! Xavier Masule, Group CFO of AirlinePros International expounds as he deliberates the low load factors, low yields and the resulting profitability with the CCOs of some of the African airlines Miguel Carneiro, Kirby Gordon - FlySafair, boikanyo ntwaagae - Air Botswana, Getaneh Desta Woldemichael and Elias Gitau - DPO, at the 54th AGA of AASA - Airlines Association of Southern Africa. Low disposable income is indeed a big factor, the World Bank GINI Index postulates South Africa, Namibia, Eswatini, Botswana, Zambia and Angola as being in the top 11 wealth inequality countries. FlySafair in Africa, similar to AirAsia, which has the tagline - “Now everyone can fly”. The CCO of FlySafair has set clear policies on distribution costs. Similar measures can bring down costs for airlines that can reduce prices for low income consumers. The fledgling African Airlines face unfair competition from the big established airlines from Europe, Middle-East, Asia and the Americas. “Airlines are the means to an end”. The economy needs cargo capacity for trade and seat capacity to bring tourism traffic. From this perspective comes the most debated question - Is there a solution for the survival of African airlines when juxtaposing the multiple objectives of different stakeholders? Is it realistic for governments to capitalize or subsidize or privatize their airlines to achieve their objectives? The profit motive of foreign airlines will be the deciding factor on operations to any country! Covid, grounded airlines impacting both trade and tourism. The need for a local airline (not necessarily a government airline) is rational. Can African airlines CCOs achieve sustainable outcomes? Alliances, Joint Ventures, Codeshares, Interlining etc. used by airlines globally can increase their offerings. A properly managed African Alliance (emphasis on properly managed not forgetting the failure of Air Afrique!) or bilaterals with increased flight frequencies could provide convenience, flexibility and growth. Collaboration on joint purchasing agreements provide economies of scale and reduces costs that converts into lower prices for the lower disposable income demographic for growth. Cross-border Consolidation between African Airlines? The Yamoussoukro Declaration, 1988, morphed into SAATM is facing a slow adoption. Deregulation in USA saw many airlines file chapter 11 bankruptcy protection followed by consolidation. In Africa, few countries have multiple airlines like South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, with a mix of national and some privately owned airlines. Pursuit of consolidation requires an equitable ownership structure. PPP - Public Private Partnership with right amount of autonomy and control creates an enabling environment for sustainable profitability for African airlines.
