Congratulations Harvard University on the successful Phius+ CORE REVIVE certification of 5 Sacramento St and 13 Kirkland Pl in Cambridge, MA! These two gut renovations created 9 dwelling units of high performance, low energy housing meeting the highest standards in sustainability.
We are excited to announce that Harvard University Housing's renovation projects at 5 Sacramento Street and 13 Kirkland Place in Cambridge have achieved Phius Passive House Certification. The projects involved transforming two wood-framed buildings into multi-unit housing designed for Harvard graduates and affiliates. 5 Sacramento Street previously served as a young adult mental health services office, while 13 Kirkland Place was a single-family residential building. The buildings have been reimagined as five units with 19 beds and four units with ten beds, respectively. Notably, a 400 SF addition was seamlessly integrated into the 13 Kirkland Place project. The commitment to sustainability is evident as both buildings are now 100% electric. To meet the rigorous energy usage requirements of Phius certification, innovative solutions were implemented. An additional insulated exterior wall, almost 8 inches thick, was created within the existing exterior wall, ensuring superior insulation without compromising the historic exterior façade. Both buildings maintained their exterior façade, including faux double-hung casement windows, to preserve their authentic aesthetic and comply with the Cambridge Historical Commission's guidelines. Projects certified to Phius' climate-specific, cost-optimized standard are proven to use 40-60% less energy while providing a comfortable living environment. This accomplishment reflects our unwavering dedication to green building practices and sustainability by Harvard University Housing. #ProjectManagment #PassiveHouse #Sustainability #PhiusCertified #GreenBuilding
